I'm playing the game with a half-elven druid (8) sorcerer (2) character, and am currently in the middle of the second chapter. Before, I tried fighter, monk and fighter / wizard or fighter / sorcerer combinations, but this one is the most fun so far.
Stats: Str 12, Dex 11, Con 14, Int 12, Wis 17, Cha 13 - probably not the optimal choice, but it works. High wis is important for a druid char, charisma could be higher but I don't plan on leveling up the sorcerer too often, so that's ok. I choose the druid class "shapeshifter", but as cool as the feature may sound, I don't use it very often - the animals one can shapeshift into are not that deadly, one cannot use spells or potions while shapeshifted and when shifting back to human, there's a small HP penalty
The animal companion and animal empathy are very cool, though. The dire wolf animal companion is ok for melee combat, at the moment I use it with the monk henchman, and together they are very good at taking care of the grunt work. The only thing that sucks is one cannot tell the animal companion to stop bashing doors / chests, and since I chose the pixie familiar for the sorcerer, it will sometimes happen that the char is already in full combat while the animal companion is still bashing the door that was just unlocked by the pixie
As for the animal empathy feature, I use it to add random animals to the party. There are guard dogs everywhere, and these are ok - but farm animals and deer only make good monster food

Wild animals can also be dominated, but when the effect ends (for example when resting) the animal will turn to a foe again and attack, so try to get the wild animal killed in combat before resting.
Add to that the summon creature spell, and your druid will never feel alone anymore

But with a henchman, an animal companion, a dominated creature, a summoned creature and a familiar, the screen can get a bit crowded sometimes
Useful spells: Call lightning and Flame leash are very cool indeed. I don't use Entangle or Grease much, they don't seem to work that well. Flame pillar is not bad either. But otherwise, for attack spells, I rely more on the sorcerer's knowledge - ray of frost, magic missile and stuff like that. Even with only two levels, it's pretty useful already.
Weapons: Got some of the items in Marduk's forge in the first chapter - Fey spear, Holy sickle, Desert wind. Of those, I prefer the last as it gives fire damage too. But the druid is not really a melee character.
As for the henchmen - I tried Grimgnaw, Sharwin and the goblin sorcerer - Grimgnaw is my favorite since he doesn't get himself killed all the time
