I've been curious about this for a while, and then I saw someone else briefly mention it in a post.
Does the fame ranking have any real gameplay effect? I know you'll get the usual "you're nearly a legend around here" comments, and people's disposition towards you increases a bit, but what else? What actions have the most impact on your rep?
I joined the morag tong around lvl 20 earlier, and killing a few people bumped me up more than becoming grandmaster of two guids had done. Also, sometimes I feel I've done tremendous things that I'm positive will be talked about for generations, only to see my rep go up by 1, if at all. What gives?
Does freeing slaves improve your fame, and wil freeing enough slaves let you pursue the twin lamps for real??
I'm up to around a fame of 35 with my current character, & I think it's a personal record. I've also heard of people saying the have fame ratings of more then 50-60. What are you guys' personal records?

I asked the development team leader this question shortly after the game appeared, while writing my review. He told me that no, fame ranking, while implemented in the game, as such had no effect on anything. They just never got around to actually using it.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

It does have one purpose, but its a bit of a spoiler. In the main quest when you are looking for a safe haven for the Ashlander camp in the deadric ruin, you can speak to one of the leaders of the warring factions, if your speechcraft is above a certain level, OR your reputation is above a certain level, you'll get told that she will allow the Ashlanders to live in the ruin, and that they have nothing to fear from her. Your journal will also say 'I doubt the story would have been so moving without my reputation/skill with words' depending on the factor that ended up influencing the NPC, if its both, then I think your character comments on skill with words.
Also we'll be using reputation a little in the LGNPC project with any luck.
