Playing through with an underpowered character...

Yeh..I've played through BG2 a couple times now (one with a Kensai/Mage which kinda sucked, as I destroyed everything I got near, my Halberd Loving Wizard Slayer which ended up to be very nice to play as) and this time round I want to do a character that is more fun and a challenge.

Y'see I love Bastard Swords, but I've never fancied the idea of be able to Dual Wield them or use a shield with it, as you can in real life either use them one handed, or two handed.

Single-Weapon style with a Bastard Sword. This isn't the only problem as Bastard Swords are easily the worst class of Swords in SOA(no TOB for me).

Great.

Anyways I've planned my route and stuff, but I just need hints for a Class/Party. I was thinking a Kensai for the bonuses and a Sword Saint sounds cool for someone like this, but he will be really easy to hit with his really high AC. In fact anyone with the ability for Grand Mastery would be nice...A Paladin wouldn't too bad, but no GM and not using them as a Caddy for the Holy Avenger just sounds daft.

Party wise, providing Minsc and Viconia are with me, I'm not too fussed (not keen on Korgan or Edwin, Korgan is a Dwarf and Edwin causes more problems than he is worth with Minsc).

Thanks in adnvance

just a suggestion

you kensai bastard sword +++++ single weapon style
minsc - nice tank w/ armor flexibility for stealth or assault operations
valygar - nice scout, great backstab, his armor is some of the best the game has to offer
viconia - covers all needs for clerical skills
nalia - mage 1
imoen - mage 2

this group is built heavy for stick and move/ambushing. You'll have fair summoning, a nice balance of offensive and defensive spells to compliment a set of fighters designed for mobility. This also seems to stick with your underpowered theme as you're without anyone who can go toe to toe with three enemies simultaneously and hold their own. An argument can be made for minsc, but he'll probably better serve you in lighter armor.

Underpowered? A kensai with ***** in Bastard Swords???

Go trough SoA with a Club Dual-Wielder BeastMaster, THAT's an underpowered character to play :D

Also fun if you dont want to create an to powerfull charcter,
When rolling for stats, roll as many times as you like, but dont change them. So no 8charisma for you fighter and putting those points on dex and con.

I found that very good rollplaying.

I think the point buy system is actually a great way to have stats. :o

For an underpowered character just play a solo jester :D .

Jester *CAN* rock, if you're good with bards... but a BeastMaster dual-wielding clubs can't be strong... Sure it can go through BG2... but it would be really challenging :)

Beastmasters aren' as underpowered as anyone thinks. Their just more restricted in their weapon choices. Just look at the Club +3 Blackblood in trademeet or that one in the druid grove. And unless im mistaken they can use bows even though arrowheads r made of steel. The summoned animals can help at the start of the game They also act as fodder in later parts. The animals can distract the enemies and using stealth the Beastmaster can sneak up on the mage. Question. Has anyone actually tried a normal game with the Beastmaster?

Edit:Just look at some of the Staves in the game. The staves of fire, earth and air can summon elementals. He can use these when the animals get weak.

Well... everyone can use staffs & Clubs... There's something like 3 club in the game. (There's no Club +1, Club +2, etc.)... so it would be very hard to play!

Whenever I see all those **** I think someone's swearing. If you're deciding between a kensai and several other classes, you can download a kensai NPC (Chloe), meaning that you could have a kensai and a paladin or whatever.

:D me to... anyway I'd have to say that the jester is under powered, Only because I am not as good as playing with bards as I am with Fighters, (kensai, berserker, etc.) so I always want them to go to the front lines, and they get massacred. Just my two cents worth.

IMO the Jester isn't versetile enough for solo. His confuse ability gives them a +4 bonus to their saving throw. Even with greater malision they have a very good chance at saving. But hes fine for normal mode cuz the party can make up 4 his weaknesses and he can act as a bonus caster, backup fighter and theif. (pick pockets, knock)

@SP101 Sure everyone can use staffs or clubs but beastmasters r the only ones who bother to use them. The clubs r easy as hell to get and they compare to any longsword. When u get the staves of air, fire, earth and rhynn ur just as good as any other ranger if not better cuz of ur familiar and free summons.

A Bastard Sword weilding Skald would be a really cool character, and in no way an overpowered one.

Bards can use all weapons, except those like Carsomyr, Staff of the Magi etc of course, at least until they get UAI ;)

Bards can use Halberd, Two Handed Swords and other huge weapons if they have the strengh for it.
