I just installed Baldurs Gate again and didnt like too many of the basic ones so i went to a portait sight. I clicked download and i couldnt put it in Bg1 so now it is just on my desktop. I heard that you needed to add a file but when i went to explore on disk 1 and tried to make a new folder called Portraits but it said there was no room on the disk. I have no idea how to realy do too much stuff on my comp and I am at a total loss with this.

OK, here's EXACTLY what you do. After downloading your favorite portraits, open up your BG directory. Should be something like C:\Program Files\Black Isle\BG I don't have it installed at the momment so I'm not sure as to the exact folder name BG is under but it should be obvious once you get the the Black Isle folder which one it is. Once you're in there create a folder named Portraits. From here just take all the portraits you have downloaded and cut and paste them into the newly created folder. And from now on just save all your portraits to said folder. Now during character creation select custom and pick your new portrait. But to change it mid game you'll need either gatekeeper, sword coast keeper, or nearinfinity. One more thing... make sure you ahve both the large and small portraits. That should get you going.

this isn't true...actually. you could go to charature records and select custom which is right above export. then choose to custom the apperance and then

I'm not sure what you're downloading but it should be in bitmap(.BMP) format which you can open in MSpaint if you really need to. And you can save them anywhere initially, just cut and paste them to the portraits folder once they're on your computer. I hope that helps.

it might be a .zip file and in which case you would need a program like winzip or winrar...

That's entirely possible, but with the time saved on downloading such a small file, you'd lose just as much if not more time unzipping it.
