Why do thieves and bards have worse thac0 than clerics?

Isn't that a bit weird? Why is an evil assassin worse in combat than a cleric? Or why is a cleric better than a bard? A bard can use almost any weapon. To be able to do that they must have trained alot and should get a better thac0.

Good question.

iin D&D, clerics are warrior-priests, so they are usually pretty good at fighting, albeit not nearly as good as the pure combat classes. Theives and bards are not good warriors, they rely a lot more on their other skills to help them out, such as finding traps or being sneaky and backstabing.

Yeah, but assassins are supposed to be masters of the swift, deadly strike, and not being able to make contact with their first swing will have a negative impact on their careers (and lives).

True That!
Assassins are supposed to be experts/adept killers, thus, they should also have the additional +1 to hit and damage as he levels up like the bushwacker thief kit.

Well, actually an assassin is a master of backstabbing, real combat is different. An assassin meeting a cleric in handtohandcombat would loose, but after a backstab that wont be necessary.
Assassins are supposed to kill their victim before the victim knows the assassin is there, not fight him to death.

Then maybe assassins should get a thac0 bonus of more than 4 when hidden. They could get an increase at the same time they get an increase in backstab multiplier. Maybe a thac0 bonus of 6 when multiplier is 6 and thac0 bonus of 8 when multiplier is 7.

Try an assassin dualled fairly early on to a cleric if you want the best of both worlds.
Hint: "Harm" + poison = instant death

I would'nt do that. Poison works faster in high levels and the x7 backstab multiplier is irresistable. Just think how high the Assassin's backstab multiplier can go, then decide if you would really opt to dual class him. This also apply when ToB come out, maybe the Assassin's backstab can go up to x12.
