Best weapon to backstab with?

I'm just trying to find a decent weapon for Jan here. I know he's not much of a backstabber, but he's the only guy I have in my party who can do it.

I plan on playing through ToB, so any help here is appreciated.

Well..

The above are good, Celestial Fury is nice, too, but others may be using it. Once he gets to fairly high level, he can do some pretty wicked backstabs.

Staff of Ram or Dagger of Stars(extra inviso assuming someone else is using the SOM)

Backstab

You can't backstab with Staves.
It depends what you are fighting.... I alternate between CF and Daystar

False, you CAN backstab with staves & clubs

Are you sure?

When my Imoen tries with the Staff of the Magi (which I thought whould be perfect) the game reports a "Weapon unsuitable for backstab".

Oh, I think I just realized why... It's a Mage Only Item.

I'll just lower my head in shame now...

You can only backstab with weapons usable by a single-class thief. Since Staff of the Magi is mage only, thieves can't backstab with it.

Exactly. Equip Imoen with Staff of the Ram and try, you will see.
