My friend and I have recently been trying to play Baldurs Gate 2 in multi player mode but have so far, not been successful. I am well acquainted with the game, as I have beaten it with several partys on several different occasions, but multi player is new for me. Could someone please give a step by step process of how to start a multi player game with a friend through DSL? Thanks.

really simple.

have your friend host a game, and stay at the character creation screen -> multi player - connect - tcp/ip -> create game.

tell him to give you his IP, and then you go multi-player - connect - tcp/ip -> join game and type in his IP. viola.

Thanks, is your IP number the one located on a sticker on the bottom of your DSL router (the IP address like 192.168.0.1)?

No, your IP adress identifies your computer on the internet and is assigned everytime you connect your computer to the internet. Most providers assign a random number everytime, only a few assign a fixed address.
An easy way to find out your IP address is to visit http://julianfriedrich.com/php/meineip.php (It's in German but there's nothing you actually need to read except the number ;) )

I thank you very much for the help, but whenever my friend tries to join my created game he is booted off within seconds. We'll try again tomorrow I guess. thank you for your help.

You can also find your IP here :

www.whatismyip.com

It's easier to remember. Finally, if you have a Router you can't host. You'll need to have your friend host the game or to config your router.

Actually I think it says on the sticker that I have a modem not a router, sorry. The strange thing is that when I tried to join my friends game using his IP number it said 'could not connect to the game session'. This whole business is really a pain. Thanks for all your help though.

Try creating the game yourself. Maybe your friend have a router? Anyway...
