HoU - Identifying problems

Hello there!

I play with a char that doesn't have high lore scores. I have Sharwyn and Tomi around, and if I talk to them I can ask them to identify my items, they agree and nothing happens, the items in my inventory remain unidentified. I thought I was supposed to give the unidentified thing to them, but when I tried I got the message "Sharwyn/Tomi cannot be bartered with". Can anyone please tell me how it works?

P.S. Though it's not a forum rule, a moderator sugguests that we start threads with "HoU" or "SoU" or "NWN" according to the part we want to discuss, so that it would be easier to find what we're looking for. I think that's a good idea, therefore I tried to set an example :D Please follow :)

It should work the way you tried. Chose the dialog Option "Identify my stuff", and the NPC will automatically try to identify everything you've got.
I don't know about Sharwyn and Tomi, but Deekin worked for me. But then again he has something about 30 lore...

I'll try him, then. I'm suspicious, though, b/c there's no feedback like "lore points too low" or "failed" or sg at all... Simply nothing happens.

You get no feedback, but I've never experienced that it failed.
All the items are just identified.

I wanted to make sure that it's not me doing sg wrong, so I left only one unidentified item in my inv to check on that. The same happened, it remained unidetified after talking to any of them :( Maybe it's a bug?

OK! I just tried 3 things. I started a save game with 2 unidentified items - a +3 shield, and the Hearth Shield (tougher).

I asked Sharwyn, out-of-party, to ID my items - nothing happened. I added her to the group, and asked again - she identified the +3 shield, but not the hearth shield, and there were no error messages (hearth shield still blue). I then asked Deekin (already in party) to ID me, and the hearth shield was added.

So, I suspect that out-of-party ID is either at a low level, or is flawed; and clearly there are no messages when the ID check fails.

I tried Deekin as Balck suggested, but he didn't offer to identify my items at all, so asked Sharwyn and Tomi again, same results. I added the thing to Tomi's pack (he's in my party, Sharwyn's not) and tried to examine it from there, but didn't work either. Took it back, drunk a Lore potion (used the "Identify" button from the pop-up menu), clicked on the item, chose "Examine" and NOTHING HAPPEND again! There were no "Identify" button at the bottom of the description. I just don't understand

Me neither, this sounds seriously messed up. Can merchants still identify your magical gear?

Yes, Thesthra (or whatever she's called) can do it for 100gp, that works fine. Lucky, b/c I don't know any other way to have them identified... :p

Well, since you can have 2(+) henchmen in HoU, you might want to add Deekin to your party for the identifies when you head up the well, then drop him.

I know, I know - there are better NPCs out there, but somehow, I just really got to liking his attempts at "non-koboldness", and use him regularly. Besides, using Deekin and the other PCs means more than 1 NPC, which means *finally* some clever banters in NwN!

Deekin is just plainly cute. Who cares if he's weak, he's cool! :D

Besides I found his bard song to be quite powerful.

Wierd, Deekin doesn't want to identify items nor join me! Maybe it depends on the type of char?

I took Sharwyn, finally, and I realized what the problem was. I found some unknown gems and put it in my backpack (the bigger items were already there). I asked her to identify my stuff and she did the gems but not the armor and weapons! So I guess her Lore points were simply not high enough for the task. And when I tried the potion, I realized that it only increases the skill point, and my Lore was so low that even with that added I wasn't able to succeed. So everything worked fine, it's only me lacking some skills :)
