Once I've completed a given quest is there any reason why I need to keep the used quest item in my inventory? I'm thinking specifically about the various books and journals I've been lugging around. I feel like the medievel Bookmobile.

Just drop quest items still in your backpack after you have completed the quest.

ok...

That's what i've been doing. The thing is, these things take up a lot of space, space i could be using for looting purposes. I guess what I'm asking is, at the end of the game, is there some big bonus for hanging on to all the crap that you've accumulated? I'm a gnome wizard with only 3 BoH's and and a few of those half ass bags so my encumberance is always at a premium.

Hello fellow pack rat.

I think Xandax was trying to tell you to just drop the items, but here is what I do. Pick a chest (or other container) that you will visit often and put all of those quest items in there. For example (I don't think this is a spoiler) in Chapter 1 I put all the itmes in a chest in the Temple of Tyr. I haven't actually needed any of them after completing the quests, but I like to make sure.

Most quest items can be recovered using the Divine pools in the respective chapters, as well, if you do loose one.

I never carry quest items around for quests I already have completed, neither do I save them someplace.

And yes - as S.Johny pointed out - I was advicing you to just drop them ... guess the sentence was written poorly :)
