From IWD to HoW

I just finished Icewind Dale, and continued with the same party on to Heart of Winter, but I'm unclear on one thing. I created a new game and the message came up asking if I wanted to load my party from the original game and I said yes. When the game started up, however, one of my party members had all of his equipment, money, and items he was holding still on him from IWD. Why is that? Are your party members supposed to start out with no equipment or retain what they had from the first game in HoW?
Thanks.

WEEEEELL, it's a bit normal that you start with the same equipment isn't it?

you are suposed to start with exactly what you exported... sence there is an auto export at the end, you will get what was exported. the only things that don't export are quest items and bags (and whats in the bags) (execpt the jester bag of holding... that gets exported too).
krian... don't be a smart a**

And dont forget that you only start with very little gold
I had roughly 700000 gold at the end of IWD and got only 17000 in HoW.
PS: I like poiting out the obvious dark_raven

Like Some Advice On Starting HOW
I just finished IWD. Since the game clears after the "movie" about defeating Bro P/Be, I was wondering if:
1. I should load HOW and import characters from IWD? or
2. Load HOW, and go back to Kuhldahar from a save just before the return to Easthaven, do HOW, and then go on to finish IWD again?
3. Do experience points for winning IWD get added to characters before game clears?
4. Is the same 1,800,001 XP cap in effect for HOW?
5. Are some areas in HOW not accessible if you have reached a certain level?
Thanks for any help!!

Before finishing IWD and entering HOW, spend all of your gold on the highest priced magical items. You'll be able to sell them to a wizard on the Burial Isle in HOW for a pretty penny. I got nearly 60% of the purchase price. I was in the early stages of HOW and had already built my gold up to over 100,000. Unfortunately, there are few items worth buying. It seems like every time I spend 40,000 on a +4 nose-picker, I find a +5 in the next cave I enter.
