planar sphere stronghold

If you talk to the Knights before you exit the sphere back to the slums is it possible they leave and go somewhere else? They told me that they would leave and help on my world even though my main character is a Sorcerer. I then went outside and got possession of the sphere from Lavok. Went back in and didn't see them.

The Solamnic Kinghts are trying to get back to their world by using the Sphere. If you talk to them before entereing the inner Sphere, you only find this out, but nothing more happens. When the quest is completed (you come back to Athkatla) you'll find that they're gone: and that's all 
Check your journal, it says that the Solamnic Kinghts quest is completed, you got the XP and nothing more needs to be done about it. <--

IIRC there are two ways of solving this quest. after you have been granted the sphere, go back inside and if they are still there, you can either go to Ribald to get them sent to their own plane or you can go to Sir Ryan Trawl to have them set up home elsewhere.
in order to get the golden girdle you must send them back to their home plane

I think I know what happened. When I started to walk out of the sphere for the final exit I spoke with the Knights. They asked about getting home and after conversation they left. I went back to a previous save to figure out what happened. If you speak to the knights before gaining the sphere as your stronghold they leave. If don't speak to them on exit and then come back in a mage will appear to give you the quest. This tricky game we love.
By the way did anyone notice I'm not playing a Paladin as my main character this time?
