that most of you have played all the Baldur's gate games. What is in your opinion the most difficult fight in the games?
In every fight there is the matter of deploying the right tactics. But when you fight an extremly powerful enemy things can go wrong no matter what. A dragon can kill your entire party in a few seconds if a few saving throws go wrong. In my experience Draconis was the toughest dragon by far. But you'd expect a dragon to be a fierce enemy, right? Along with the other, (in lack of a better word) "bosses" in the game. Like Saravok, Bodhi, Irenicus and Amelyssan.

But there is one fight that really sticks out as number 1 for me. And it didn't seem difficult at all, but it still required me to reload the game about 10 times before I finally beat them. I am thinking about the 4 dwarves guarding the entrance to the demon in Durlag's tower.

Draconis is definitely one of the most powerful enemies. I found that the battle with Irencus (back at Spellhold) wasn't easy either (there were way too many prisoners to deal with, let alone facing yourself attacking you  ) . And now I'm just laughing at the countdown with Bodhi, but at that time it was quite a challege, too...

But the most difficult was the first attempt to defeat Yaga Shura, no doubt. B/c I didn't know that I should destroy his heart to break his invulnerability :D

draconis was truly truly hard. imagine pounding on him like yu do with firkraag and he pops into invisibility.

i always find the shadow dragon hard without all my cleric spells being neg. plane protection. i usually take him early to avoid the liches and bone golems and the breath really can do a number on you.

For me it's definitely killing the deamon in Ulgoth's beard right after you have complted durlag's tower. The way that all my chars were "dying" really freaqued me out and it must have taken me days to be able to complete that fight.

The demon after durlags tower is hard to beat unless you use cloudkill, which i didnt know about when i fought him, he is probably the hardest thing to fight.

It all depends on what type of methods you are willing to use to kill someone. If you use traps, alot of thew hard people in BG2 wont pose any challenge. (Firkaag, Shadow Dragon, Kangaxx etc) can all be killed like this.

Personally, i didnt find the demon knight (in BG1) very hard. I just hasted and defensive harmonied my party, and just clicked attack. no spells, no mirror (never understood whatthat did anyway), just hack and slash, and hes dead in like 10 seconds. he got 1 fireball away, thats all. i used this same tactic on sarevok. I just got everyone to chop him to bits, he only did like 30 damage to minsc before dying.

Aec'Letec (or whatever his name is) can be easy too. Cast haste and defensive harmoney and go downstairs. Cast outlikes resiliense sphere on him (usually works), and proceed to kill all the cultists. then wait till outlikes wears off. then, as usual, chop him to bits.

the hardest battle in BG1 for me was the chessboard.

BG2 is much different, due to many more spells, one cannot simply hack and slash their way to victory as easily. If you dont use cheese, dragons can be challenging if you dont know what you are doing. Same thing with Kangaxx, althoufgh with spell immunity: abjuration, most of his potency is gone. im not really sure who i find hardest in BG2, maybe when i finish it again, i will answer

Try the Eclipse encounter from the Solaufein mod. I retried at least ten over times. For those who don't know what it is, it's an encounter where a high level sorceror (mage?), druid, cleric, fighter, berserker and anti-paladin attacks your party when you move about at night. The anti-paladin has a blade that dispels magic, and all of them regenerate really fast. Last but definitely not least, at regular intervals a sort of 'time stop' will occur, but all of them are immune to time stop. So turns out that during the time stop they all got free hits on my characters. Thankfully my character was an FMT and could cast PFMW. The only way I ever managed to win was having Sarevok run around with Ravager +6 and hoping for vorpal hits on the three fighters, because after that the three spellcasters couldn't really do much against my FMT, Sola and Sarevok.

heh heh... no matter how I many times I play the game it always takes me a few goes to beat the guy on the steps of the friendly arm in without cheating i.e. attacking before the conversation is over, running in and out of buildings, sacraficing imoen coz she is an annoying b.... etc.

I found Drizzt in BG I fairly difficult. That guy just slashed straight trough all my summoned pets, so it was hard to keep him at bay :) . The best archers and arrows did the trick for me (if I got lucky enough to hit him fast and hard). needed quite a few reloads for that battle.

Also that battle in spellhold was annoying for me since it was so freaking chaotic.

Well:

Difficulty of fights depends a lot on their order. Do Firkragg sans cheese & fresh out of Chateau Irenicus, he's a very tough fight. Do him at the end of Chapter 6, and it's sad.

However the standout fights for me are all in tactics:
Eclipse - wicked design, great use of buffs, no spawn trapping
the Ritual - low stat NPCs, no cheesy no-drop stuff, but an insanely tough fight
Ascension - just plain mean finale

Oh I forgot about the prince of demons at the bottom of watchers keep coz I usually skip him for the sake of roleplaying. He would definatly rank as my hardest, but as you said it depends when you do it, and I usually tackle watchers late SoA or First up in ToB.
