Sorcerer or Mage?

I am playing a Sorcerer right now, but I am thinking about changing to play a mage. Is there any real adventages of being a Sorcerer at higher level? Anyone got a level vs number spells chart for Sorcerer? The extra spells and ability to cast any spell doesn't seem to offset the inability to scribe spells and limited selection of spells. Any high level Sorcerer out there?

It depends on your style of play. I, for once, prefer the Sorcerer's verstility of not memorizing specific spells over the Mage's, of being able to learn any spell in the game. I also think that designing a balanced Sorceress is quite challanging, rather than rerolling the mage's statistics until you get an 18 and scribing a lot of spells.

On the buttom line, take the class you find more fun. That's the purpose of the game (-:

Right now, Sorcerer is definitely more fun to play. I am just afraid that as I spent more time building him up and later on in the game I found out I made a mistake in choosing my spell lineup earlier in the game and that will hurt me. A mage seems to be more "forgiving". I already have to start my Sorcerer up twice because I picked some stupid/unless spells at the beginning. I am not too use to the spell effect. I played a fighter/thief in BG1. I am thinking maybe playing a mage will be better for a novice?

Sorcerers are very powerful, but playing a mage is much easier and may be better if you're trying to figure out the spells.

I'm still planning on putting the complete Sorcerer spell chart together, but I haven't gotten the time yet.

If this is your first try on the game then it is possible that you'll have some difficulties playing as a sorcerer. This difficulties are not associated with the class itself but by the fact that there are a large number of new spells in BG2 (especially those protection and anti protection spells of high level spellcasters)
Simce you may have limited experience with the mechanics and performance of so many new spells, the reduced number of spells a sorcerer can learn may prove a disadvantage-especially if you don't know what you'll face in the course of the game.
However,if you had beat the game just once, you can pick sorcerer without any serious concern. In fact i believe that after so many years of mages being the "standard" approach to the spellcaster class, sorcerer is a very welcome addition and any player should try them.
I read -but i can't confirm it-that the new classes and kits in BG2 are imported by 3rd edition AD&D rules.I also read -by some players trying those rules-that these new rules make much more sense that the 2nd edition. It would be interesting if someone with some experience on 3rd edition rules can comment about them.(As you propably know both upcoming Neverwinter nights and Pool of Radiance:Ruins of Myth Drannor will use 3rd edition rules)
