I've been reading various BG2 message boards for a while and I've noticed that some people were a bit disappointed by how the story turned out. Soooo I was wondering what y'all think a better ending and/or storyline would be like... Feel free to be as long winded as you like

*Beware!!!!!*
I would've liked having the possibility of being ahead of Irenicus a bit. You're constantly on his trail, constantly 2-3 steps beyond, and never have any chance to catch on - for example, catching some of Bodhi's vampires and interrogating them, getting an Elven embassy telling you of the exile and of his intentions, etc.
Another twist could've been fully joining the dark side. After some of the dream sequences in which you wish to "seize power", Irenicus gives you the option to join him, which is followed by a long list of chores and quests (including various things in the underdark and maybe even in the Elven city). In the end of the list, Bodhi, Irenicus AND you are crowned as Gods, or at least Irenicus/Bodhi and you're some sort of a demigod.

It is obvious that Irenicus is not fully aware of the powers he has awoken in you. The fact that you get the dreamsequences and such and Imoen doesn't has some special meaning - especially when you get the dream with the Tree of Life. This one isn't by the doing of Irenicus at all.
It would have been absolutely awesome if somewhere in the final battle, you would somehow regain your soul and tap into the full potential of your powers, even if it is just like a moment of clarity is for a demented person. And of course that Irenicus would suddenly realise he lost the powers.
Wouldn't it be cool to then let him experience the totality of your powers. Very Irenic .. ironic I mean, since he wanted those powers. And then he gets them as raw powers in abundance slung towards him. Really thrashing him big time.

i have to comment on this..you all think its really irenicus and immoen you see in the dream sequences..nay its not.
irenicus is the manifestion of your bhaal side..and imoen is your soul..remember the part where you get captured in spellhold..and the dream in ghostly candlekeep where you have to make a sacrifice to get to the core of yourself..finding the true part of yourself...then luring bhaal to you...he will say that your soul have taken form to guide from within..and when imoen screams...its there where your soul gets sucked out..and the real imoen will later comment she didnt have dreams...the irenicus in the dreams is just the bhaal trying to entice the player to go for grabbing power...so he later can take over a strong body

Good point but you mention the dream sequence in the asylum, well that actally features Sarevok as Bhaal.

Another point we cannot forget is, that the authors are bound to a simple rule:
It must be possible to create a sequal!
If the player really took up the powers of Bhaal and became a god... well, no sequal

True but as someone mentioned in the Goody thread P:T (which was an amazing story) was like a book, and a book has to have a beginning, middle and end, i think BG2 missed out on the middle and the end.
My brother pointed out that maybe the death of the guy on the inside front cover of the manual (can't remember his name) had something to do with the story loosing it's way.
It might also be down to Black Isle trying to rush them into finshing it, publisher pressure always makes a mockery of a story.

Right. Well my biggest gripe is that they started with a wide open story that could have gone anywhere. They didn't nail it down right at the beginning and allowed the character to kind of do whatever he wanted. Now this is a good thing, makes you feel like you are in control of your actions and your destiny and that the story could be more than what so many rpg's are. BUT as the story progressed the paths available to you became narrower and narrower culminating in one of the most cliched ending in Hollywood "ooh the bad guy just wants to take over the world. Scary..."

I feel I have to make a comment here, regarding the gaining of your powers. I absolutely agree that for a sequal you shouldn't yet reach your full potential.
However, remember Bodhi's Gauntlet? Somewhere at the end you suddenly turn into the Slayer - but you are not able to control it effectively.
I had something similar in mind in the end(therefore my comment regarding the dement person), only that one with more impact. For one moment of utter clarity, you gain full potential, and trash Irenicus completely. Afterwards however, you do not know how you did that, and how to do it again.
In the sequel you'll most probably learn (like you did in this one) more about your heritage.
And yes, I knew that the manifestations in your dreams were not the real persons, but mere representations of aspects of you.

*Spoilers,Spoilers,Spoilers*
I found the main story very intersting.I believe the designers made a good jod.It must be mentioned that in this game, unlike most CRPGs,the player know from the very start who his final enemy would be.
Usually in RPGs you start fighting evil forces without knowing who is finally behind all this.In BG2 you do the opposite:you know Irenicus is the person to blame and you trying to find out why he is especially after you-being a child of Bhaal is not enough explanation, there are many of them.
Most people think that Irenicus is just another bad guy.But this is not true, just think how many of you have guessed from the beginning that he is an elf? This is very important, since elves live different than humans (consider this-lifespan 1200 years).I just had suspected that something is strange because he had his ears covered, but not that he was an elven mage. His personality is revealed with small steps.Even his true name (Joneleth) was exposed later in the game.
His intention is mostly revenge, and this is also his motivation.Being a "god" is also his goal but he could do it using other means and not making himself an ally of the drow-something unthinkable for an elf. This points how fanatic he was to exact revenge over his own homeland.
Which brings me to what Earcaraxe mentioned. The truly evil side would be the option to be an ally of him.Just imagine your evil party, invading Suldanesselar with aid from drow, the black dragon or any another army Irenicus could gather and having to face elves,Knights of the Order (who are after you) and Drizzt's party trying to stop a decisive drow victory. This also means a complete different ending.

Did anyone give Phaere the real silver dragon eggs so she got the demon? I wonder if they attack the elves?
