Monk's Attack Question

I just started a monk last night and got him to level 8. I read on Monk's description that monk gets an unarmed attack per round and adds one extra unarmed attack every 3 levels. So by level 8, shouldn't I have 3 unarmed attacks?

level 1: 1 attack
level 3 or 4?: 2 attacks
level 6 or 7?: 3 attacks

But my screen shows that I only have 2 attacks per round?

And if I equip my longsword, the screen still shows that I get 2 attacks per round. Are those 2 attacks both from longsword, or one from longsword and one from fist? Or maybe the screen is wrong and I am actually only getting one attack?

Monks get an extra 1/2 attack every 3 levels. They use whatever weapon they have equipped or attack bare-handed if no weapon is equipped.

So it works out something like:
Level 1-2: 1 attack
Level 3-5: 3/2 attacks
Level 6-8: 2 attacks
Level 9-11: 5/2 attacks
Level 12-14: 3 attacks
Level 15-17: 7/2 attacks
Level 18-20: 4 attacks
Level 21: 9/2 attacks

As you can see, they get a LOT of attacks at high levels. Wielding the Scarlett Ninja-To even gives a bonus attack over the listed. Of course, they can't be hasted...

Also, monks act as proficient in every weapon type they can wield so your first proficiencies should go for single weapon style to get the bonus to AC and criticals. This style is also used by barehanded attacks (and shapeshifted attacks).

Up to level 15 where their fists start doing d20 you may want to use weapons if you have good ones. Beyond that only Celestial Fury (stuns) and the Scarlett Ninja-To (+1 attack, poison) are worth considering.

Thanks! So monk gains 1/2 an attack instead of one attack every 3 levels. I got the extra one attack info from planetbaldursgate.com so they must be wrong. It mades sense now.

You said that monk is proficient in every weapon, then why do they give you 3 stars to allocate? You cannot put 2 stars in any of the proficient, so shouldn't one be enough to just put in one handed style?

Monk proficiencies are really weird and undocumented. I first noticed how it worked when I realized I couldn't put a proficiency in katana but Celestial Fury worked just fine.

As you say, you can only put 1 in a given slot, since the stars make no difference for weapons and you can't use 2-h, dual, or weapon/shield you want to make sure 1 of your starting proficiencies goes in single weapon. "Proficiencies" in my post should have been singular.
