Kensai/thief How the hell :S

OK after playing SoA 1.5 years ago I found ToB very cheap in some shop and decided to buy it. Now I didn't have my old savegames so I had to start over.
Since I completed SoA many times with different classes I want to try something new. I want to solo the game with a Kensai/thief which is to said a very strong class however. How the hell do I make a kensai/thief?? I tried lvling to 13 with my kensai to notice my 'dual' button remained grey on lvling up :S. So I messed around with SK somewhat to get it active and then it turned out the class 'thief' wasn't available to dual with :S (only mage blabla). Now I'm at a loss here, and I can't find it explained anywhere apart from what to do when you actually got a kensai/thief which is just not working for me for some reason.
