Petty theft: will it catch up to you in the long run?

I needed to steal some artifacts from some guy for a mission. So I pick the lock and take the stuff right in front of him. Before he can strike, I get out the door. I drop what I just took, along with everything else I have (since it is almost all stolen), and turn myself in to a guard. So I pay my 16 pesos, and go gather up my belongings. To see what would happen, I went back in and talked to the guy I just jacked, and his rating for me was the same, and he was pretty happy to see me.

So that seemed to work out pretty well. I am wondering if there is any long term downside to committing theft like this and turning yourself in?

The only way it can catch you up is if you keep the items on you and get your bounty up again, forget to drop it and speak to the gaurd with the stplen items still in your inventory. Its no like there gone for ever tho you just have to find the evidence locker that your stuff was put in.

Or if you try to sell the same kind of item as which was stolen. If you, say, stole an ebony cuirassr from someone and then sell a different ebony cuirass, you're screwed.

just as long as you drop all ur stuff that was stolen your not gonna have any problems and if they take it then go to fighters guild in sadrith mora and pick the evidence chest in there
