The mind flayers have an insanely high chance to kill you in one hit, that's why they'll kill you quickly. A highlevel monk or barbarian can walk through them easily, otherwise hold monster sometimes works, or huge area effect spells. Cast one, run back, do it again, hope you kill one. Rest, repeat. That's basically it. Mind flayers will routinely hand you your ass even if you're high-level so take it slow and easy and save constantly and get ready to reload.

Mind flayers don't attack your body, they suck your brains out. When they drained your int, you're dead. That's why you might still have a lot of hp, but you still die. To mind flayers, int is your hp.
Their magic resistance is insanely high too. Only high level spells like fire storm or incendery cloud works on them. Cast some protections or summon some pets, else there's not much to do. Read the strategy section on this site.

thanks for all the help guys! But now I have anotehr problem in the Mind Flayer dungeon. To the left of the gladiator arena there is supposed to be some kind of a door leading to a dwarf. The problem is, there is no fucking door!!!! You just come ther and there is nothing just blackness. I am very pissed.

I had this same problem. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated. I know there is supposed to be a door there, but it's just black, nothing to open.
On the mind flayer slaying note, lvl 5 cleric spell chaotic commands works great. You are immune to their mind blasts and they are then easily shredded with distance weapons. The ones I used were the firetooth dagger purchased in Ust Natha (one of my favorite weapons), or melf's minute meteors (3rd lvl mage spell).

usually the best way would be to chaotic command urself to protect from their psionics, then make sure your AC is as low as possible so they can only hit u with critical hits
an even simpler way would be to cast 5 cloudkills =)

Use Animate dead to distract them. Skeletons are immune to their psionic powers.

Give'em some bones (that is Skeleton warriors) to crunch on - they are immune to psi attacks, give your best fighter chaotic commands - they should be a frigin piece of cake after that (they where for me at least)

Nick-Dude and Rail thats a wall, to get to the dwarf you have to go all the to the top of the screen then go to the left.Yes it is a door ,but it is just a dead end.If you try to go left out of the fighting pit you will run in to this dead end.

I didnt have any problems with it when I got to the underdark, but now when I play for the second time around, I remembered to go down to their little hide out in the athkatla sewers. And I must say its a bit harder. But yeah, I didnt need to summon any pets, just get yer main tank on chaotic commands, hopefully he has a sweetass AC, and he can just make the damn flayers stock up so he can take em one by one... Also if you have some guys from the back with ranged weapons you can take the guys out before they even touch you with their INT eating shit. Shit I was so worried before cuz I thought that shit they did was permanent, but it doesnt last for long at all, so if they got a few points of yer INT, dont get all grumpy and start playing chess instead of computers... just wait a bit. Geez.

"Would You Like to Play A Game?"- for some reason that quote just popped into mind after that last post. Regardless, glad you're doign better with the flayers; of all the enemies in BG2 I think they suck the hardest.

I would rather face 20 beholders at once than 4 mind flayers!

Seriously, chaotic commands and distance weapons make mind flayers easy. If weak in dist. wpns, have one char with great AC (and chaotic commands) attack first and draw their fire.

Thanks, Weasel. I thought the door WAS to the left of the fighting pit. Now I have to go all the way back... Hey, just another excuse to start a new party!

just use chaotic commands on your best fighter and turn him/her loose. remember to keep a couple of the flayers around to use the slave collars on. the slaved flayers will open a couple of doors for you that you normally can't without changing to the beast.
