How does the abilities of being a 'diplomat' work in IDW II.
I see this all the time and have read the manual but can someone explain to me why this is really useful during the game amongst these other abilities.
Do races help much with char scores, I mean being a half-orc raises ypur strength by 2. It seems humans offer the least amount of benefits compared to the other races.

Having a high diplomacy will open up dialogue options with certain characters/monsters throughout the game. Pure Humans can have any class as their favorite, plus extra feat at first level and +1 skill point per level up. So if you have a character that you don't care about using skills with, you can make them a Human and dump their INT and they will still get atleast one point to use. Mixing alignment in your party only gives you diversity. One party member is not going to attack another because of alignment. Having mixed alignment is not a bad idea because certain items and weapons can only be used by characters of specific alignment. Yes, some races have an ECL penalty. The reason for this is because they have such high benefits, that to balance the game, they require more xp to advance at later levels.

Humans are one of the best races in the game, period. Given some comparisons to many of the other races, you can achieve a lot more benefit than what you can from an elf or halfling for example because you can abuse the fact that you get 2 skill points per level with the lowest int score rather than 1, which basically says, "humans get 7+ free ability points" as long as you only need 2 skills. This is something other races simply can't provide. You also get an extra feat, which is usually helpful, at least in the beginning anyway. Overall, 7+ free ability points is better than any of the other stuff the races will give you. if you don't min-max though, then yeah, humans don't come out so good.
However, the ecl races are the best. In the end, you can still get to level 30 with an ecl race, so in the very long run, the penalties just don't matter if you plan on taking them through to HOF mode. So deep gnomes, drow, and to a lesser extent aasimar and tiefling, rule the other races hands down. After these, humans are probably the next best.
If you download the UPP guide from gamefaqs.com, you can read about the entire analysis which essentially proves in very fine detail all I've said here.
