Did this game get harder?

I just saved the bridge and now I'm going to the ford and I'm noticing that this area is impossible. Not all of it, just the part where a bunch of worg riders and ice trolls come after you all at once, and then some more worgs start porting in. I've tried choke points, all the spells at my dispossal and the best I can do is come out with one character dead after all the guys have been destroyed, otherwise they die much sooner and I have no hope of winning.
Now, I do remember the early chapters were the hardest, but I've reloaded about 25 times and I don't even remember doing that when I was experienced with this game. Granted, in my new party, I just have 4 characters and no fighters... heh... but still, 2 clerics should be good enough for this chapter.
Did they muck with the patch or something?

Well I did beat it, with two of my guys being at 14 and 6 life. I used most of my healing potions, blesse, doom, horror, a. scorcher, my deep gnomes mirror image/blur, my cleric's special abilities and 8 chromatic orbs to pull it off.
Part of the problem is that the clerics just aren't hitting. It just takes too long to kill one guy without magic support and by then, the stupid drums summon 2 more.
It's not a problem with my party design, just that clerics aren't meant to hit I guess. However, I hardly think the fighters would be connecting every swing either, although I know it wouldn't be as severe. However, I shouldn't have to use all of my resources and test after killing 10 monsters. What happened to this game? It was never this hard. I haven't tweaked the difficulty settings or anything. It's just running out of the box.
I know I should have grease and web, but my sorceror doesn't have those yet. Since she's a drow, it's going to take some time to get her spells.

Actually, one of my clerics is a drow cleric, and she has one level in barbarian. However, the other cleric is pure dreadmaster. The pure one hardly gets hit, and has less hit points. Needless to say, he's the more 'tank'. However, the drow cleric gets hit all the time. Now, I'm not completely oblivious to the rules, but they have the same AC at 22 right now in these opening chapters and are using comparable armors. Now if you ask me, something doesn't make sense.

HoF or Normal IWD dificulty..?
Are you sure that dificulty isn't insane?
Do you have latest patch?
Other people too has this problem...
There is big chance that game could work better if you try re-install or create new party and startover...

Well, I don't think reinstalling is in order.
I encountered the same problem with my drow cleric! Her strength is her summoning spells - no matter what weapon I give her, she'll never be as effective as my fighter, even if her AC is the highest in the party (wearing the armor made of boring beetle shell). Perhaps it has something to do with her race?

I'm not sure, but my other cleric is also a deep gnome, which suffers the same penalties in daylight. However, this AC problem happens everywhere. In fact, sometimes I can just attack with the dreadmaster and win but if I attack with both, the drow cleric just dies and I have to reload. I'm not talking about bad reflexes here - I'm just talking about sending her into battle and after 6 attacks, 4 or 5 connect and she's toast, even with 15 more hit points than my dreadmaster. Enemies seem to be smart too in that if I send her in late so they target the dreadmaster first, they just switch targets and pound the drow endlessly.
Now, this doesn't make much sense because her shield is +4 ac, her armor is also some very nice plate I got, she's wearing the same helmet my dreadmaster is - it just doesn't make any sense. She also has a level in barbarian too, which should make her more have better thac0, hp, rage, etc. than the dreadmaster.
Now that I have access to prayer, animate dead and fireball, stuff has become a lot easier and I can imagine that I won't have any more problems from this point on. However, the AC problem isn't fixed and I'm curious to know why because this character has cost about 2 extra hours of needless gameplay, slowing me down.

Check your character sheet to see if your character is proficient with everything he wields. Maybe shield penalty applies to his offhand, or something...
