I'm hanging out in the creator race ruins (in chapter three) and I've just spoken to the witch in the arden about the sundials. She's given me a book and a crystal.

I have gone to a sundial but i think I'm missing something. I've clicked the sundial, asked to "use" the sundial and even examining the sundial. Ad nothing happens. what's wrong NOW?!

You have to use the time crystal's special ability on the sundial.

Yeah, I figured that much, but would that be in the way I use the stone of recall or does it need to be put in the sundial?

Yes, the same as the stone of recall. Except you have to select its special use (the Stone of Recall does it automatically). So either right-click it in your inventory and select it, or put it in your quick bar, right-click and select it, and then you can use it however you like.
