Cd problem

Post by jezzrian »

Hi,

I've had planescape for a few years, and I was about to start a new game when the CD exploded. Literally. it took me half an hour to get all of the tiny bits of what was disc 2 out of the cd drive. Unfortunately this means that I can no longer pay the game as I only have 3 of the discs.

The cheapest I can find a copy is £30 (I live in england) and I dont really want to pay that for what is basically one disc.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

Since PS:T has been discontinued and the team responsible for it abandoned, there is nothing you can do about it - you won't be able to get a replacement disc.

I'm not sure as to the legality of downloading / copying the missing disc, as laws regarding intellectual property are obfuscated beyond belief. Because you are actually leasing the right to use the software as opposed to actually owning the thing, it might be argued that once you have payed you have the right to use it regardless of whether you have the physicial media or not, but as I'm by no means an expert in the field, take everything I say with a pinch of salt ;)

If interested you can always do some research on the topic :)

This represents a problem in genereal. The game is no longer being sold, there is no support and the developers and publishers aren't making any more money off the game anyway, yet distributing Torment would still be considered illegal, all the while quite a number of people would give everything to get their hands on a copy nowadays.

$15 from here. I've seen many others at approximately the same cost on Amazon and eBay.

Out of general interest, who owns the rights to Torment currently? Surely they haven't gone in the public domain just because the game has been discontinued...

The company that inherits the intellectual rights they purchased from Interplay--you do the math. ;) If you want to see whether a game is truly abandonware, I suggest checking a reputable site like Home of the Underdogs. They provide downloads to truly abandoned games, but offer links to reputable sites for purchase of those that are simply no longer current.
