Baldur's gate history

In the south eastern part of Baldurs Gate, there is a guide who tells you a bit about the history of Baldur's Gate:
6- NIKOLAI:
A local guide who offers to tell you the history of the city for 15 gp. His story is really interesting and is a MUST read for those of you who wish to know a bit more about the setting of the game. He tells you how Balduran founded the city, how the protection walls were erected and how the Grand Dukes were set in place. A good story all in all.
Does anyone know if, and how, I can read this now? I'm still far from entering Baldur's Gate but I'd like to read this now.
Ways to read this, or other tekst about baldur's Gate is welcome!
Thanks,
Rob-hin

The only way I can currently think of is to Gatekeeper or console your characters to the appropriate area and pay the money. My group was there recently, but I don't remember what the guide said.
Sorry dude!

Hmm, I think Balduran was a dwarf. I don't remember if the guide told me that. Perhaps those stout statues in Waukeen's Promenade are Balduran. You might find something on Sorcerers.net.

Thanks for the help, I'll check at sorceres then.
BTW, Balduran was a human I think. Those statues are indeed him and they are of human size IIRC.

Balduran was a dwarf. (I'm pretty sure - he had a dwarf hat, and used an axe and I recall hearing he was a dwarf)
He was a famous mercanery who put Baldur's Gate on the map.
He travelled about on the sea and around the sword coast. He put BG on the map by making it have a bustling sea related economy. He was a great warrior.
Balduran would not be mentioned in BG2, or around Amn, because Amnish people hate Gaters. So I doubt that "his" statue.
But yeah, I guess the only way to get the story is by going there.

Actually me0w, Balduran was human. Check out the FRS Waterdeep, which mentions him in passing. I'll look it up this week and post the quote.
Also note that Balduran used a sword - you find it on Werewolf Island. (Is that a spoiler? I'm not sure...) And he didn't put Baldur's Gate on the map - he paid for it to be built (IIRC).

Didn't he also use a shield?

Why not.
He used a silver butter knife, and a cloak!

Yes, he did. He had a sword**, a shield*, plate mail*, a helm, and a cloak***, so he practically well-prepared. Now if only he had other magic gear (preferably boots, gloves/gauntlets, and a belt), then you'd likely see a person with them be REALLY powerful.
Notes:
* = BG2 only
** = BG2 version varies in properties
*** = Believed to be BG1 only
meow: Are you sure you're not confusing Balduran with Durlag Trollkiller or a related Dwarf?

Spoiler:
The helm can be found in the beginning of BG2, right in Irenicus' Dungeon. Go past the Otyugh and it should be in a closet in the first room you enter (the one before the portal to lvl 2). But that's BG2 ofcourse, so I'm getting off-topic.

Just edited error. I intended the "BG1 only" note to be for the cloak.
Also, I've actually played BG2 before I played BG1, so - unfortunately - that's not really new to me.
Edit: I must not be concentrating! AGH! (Please, NO mental or drug jokes of any kind.)

"sword**, a shield*, plate mail*, a helm, and a cloak***"
The gold sword isn't in BG2 is it?
I never remember getting the shield in 1 or 2. (atleast almost definately in #1)
Platemail, I don't think so. It surely wasn't in #1.
A helm, yea thats in both.
A cloak, I think its probably in #2.

All of Baldurans equiment, except the Helm and Cloak, can be bought from Deidre in the Adventurers Mart, one of the two collectors-edition merchants. The helm is found in the beginning of the game, and the cloak is re-added by the Tactics mod.
Edit: @ Rob-Hin: go to your BG directory, and find baldursgate.ini. Open it with notepad or a similar program, and under [Game Options], add the line Cheats=1. Ingame, press Ctrl+Tab, and type CluaConsole:MoveToArea ("x"), with x being the area code.
Edit 2: in this case, the area code is AR1300

Thanks! It's greatly appreaciated.
Oh, I thought I should mention why this is so importand to me.
I'm currently writing a d&d game. In my game, the players will come to baldur's gate. I want to know more about the city so I can make use of it
to better the story and make the city more real to the players.

Just wondering, are you making this with some company, or as your own little project. Will it be officialy released or as some kind of mod to BG1/2 where you play a new story within the similar surroundings?

Gidday Rob-hin,
If I remember correctly there was actually a Forgotten Realms suppliment which had some info on Baldur's Gate. Either the Icy North book, or the Sword Coast book. It is Second Ed stuff, so might not be available to purchase. Let me have a look through my library tonight and I'll get back to you.
Cheers,

Well, it won't be a mod of any kind. It will be a pen and paper game. So no PC involved.
We sit around the table and I'll DM (tell) the story. Characters play the story useing their imagination.
It's kind of had to explai if you don't know d&d. (or I said it wrong in my post)
@Great Hairy
If it's not to many trouble, I'd appreciate it.
