I keep getting books, letters and parchments, but I don't know how to read them. they only show up in my quick menu and from there i can't do anything with them. Suggestions?

The way I read anything like that is press the back button (next to start) and then go into logbook. In there you'll find various sections to browse through, each containing the relevant books/letters
