Need help; Torment kills my computer.

Okay, I have Windows XP Professional. Whenever I install Torment, it works fine. I can also restart my computer fine. But, however, I can not shut down my computer and start it back up. If I do, it fails to start Windows. I have to boot it in Safe Mode and restore it to a point before I installed Torment. This is reproducable - it happens every time. I even tried installing the Patch 1.1 to Torment, but still the same thing. I understand that Torment was made for Windows 95/98, but the fact that I have Windows XP should affect how the game RUNS, not whether or not I can boot my OS. ;-;

Does anyone know what I can do? I love this game so much, I used to play it all the time when I had Windows 98. The reason I upgraded to XP is because Windows 98 started repeatedly dying. The third time I had to start over from scratch with nothing installed on my computer, I was tired of it and changed to XP. (I don't believe Torment had anything to do with crashing 98 - it wasn't installed at the time.)

My dad says my hard drive is big enough to install Win 98 and use a multiple boot system, but he says this is very difficult to do. Does anyone have any solutions besides this one?

What is the state of your system update wise?

If you haven't done so, I would highly recommend going to http://www.windowsupdate.com and downloading the bizillion updates to Windows XP that have been made available since its original release, including Service Pack 2.

I would download a few maintenance programs to make sure your system isn't bloated as well:

http://www.winguides.com/regmech/ (Registry Clean-Up tool)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ (Spyware Removal Tool)

I have never heard of a problem like this before, which means something must be borked with your Windows XP installation.

Do you have any other issues with the Operating System at all?

Don't touch your registry, and don't install Service Pack 2 as it is still very buggy. System Restore is a nono, as it has always proven to do bizarre things to the registry without actually "restoring" anything. This is a quick way to make your system do strange things. While this may not be the problem, Torment's installation does not touch a single dll/exe/key required to shutdown on any version of Windows. Torment runs on XP without error.

1. no sys restore ever
2. update
3. check for viruses/spyware with updated tools
4. reinstall Torment

If you haveb't done this yet make sure you are running Torment in compatibility mode for Windows 98.

Also unnecessary.
