1) PM novel? I'm flattered!
2) I'd definitely suggest the patches. I'd suggest you read what they fix along with what they have as bugs. Not too much for bugs brought after them, but it's good to read up on them anyways. The links will have the details in them.
3) Just walk between maps, and you eventually run into numerous random encounters, ranging from giant spiders (Rather easy.) or bears (Not too hard.)to hobgoblins (Wimpy.) and trolls (Dangerous before 6th level!) If you don't have a character with ranks in the 'Survival' skill (In your case, you have a Ranger.), you won't be able to avoid monsters when you encounter them on the world map. The more points in 'Survival', the more likely you'll be able to choose whether to confront random encounters or not.
Also, you'd really want a Sorcerer or Wizard in your party for starters, particularly for one reason: offensive spells. You'll need offensive spells in a number of encounters later on. The Rogue, Cleric, and 2 of your warriors (I'd suggest the Fighter and EITHER the Ranger OR Paladin) are a very good choice, but arcane spells such as Fireball, Lightning Bolt, and Magic Missile will be good to soften up enemy ranks with easy. Still, if you're positive you'll find a way to not rely on arcane spells, then you may have some bragging rights.
Edited: Threads merged to save up on saver space. Also, I need some practice doing that as well.
