Shadow varient of spells

Spell like shade permit to cast shadow varient of spells of lower lvl, what does it means and does?

Originally shadow-spells were developed to allow Illusionsist (a completely separate class in 1st Ed ADnD) access to the more damaging spells of the Wizard.

Generally, in 3rd ed, they are not really worth it, unless you are a specialist mage with no actual access to the original spell. A shadow version of a spell generally does less damage, and is less efective.
