I'm running Morrowind on a Pentium 4 2.8 with 1 gig of ram and Windows XP home...I close as many background programs as I can, and yet the game is still very unstable, often crashing to the desktop when I load, oe die. can somebody help me figure this out?

Morrowind is the least stable game I've ever had the misfortune to play. Quick save as often and possible, and learn to live with it as we have :D

Even on the Xbox it crashes sometimes but an easier solution is just not to Die!!!!

I seldom die, but my game crashes very often as well (especially when I try to enter Raven's Rock from the northeast for some weird reason) I just quicksave all the time though

Very odd. I've never had any instability problems with Morrowind, and most of the posters up on the Elder Scrolls forum don't mention it, either. It's not well optimized for memory use, but it's not a crasher, either.

XP can and does run a lot of processes in the background. Have you checked to see what's going on behind the scenes? If you have any anti-virus, contact management, or screensaver memory resident programs, I'd suggest turning them off temporarily. In fact, turn off all you can before running MW. It's not the drain on memory, in your case, since you've got 1 GB RAM, just as I've got. It's a matter of different programs competing for the same pieces of memory, without letting one another know about it.

If thoughts would come true, the whole Bethesda team was strangled by me by now. The box clearly says that the game supports my graphics card, but every 2-3 days the game crashes, and I get a BSOD saying there's something wrong with my drivers. I have the latest driver for my GC and I've never had such a warning in other games. And I'm not forgetting all the CTD's, almost every 2 hours.

But still, the game is too brilliant to throw away :D

What are you going to play in 2006/2007 if you strangled the Bethesda Team?

Using the fine art of necromancy I will tap all the creativity from their dead brains and transfer it to my mindless scamps who are imprisoned in my basement. If I use some "persuasive techniques" they'll probably finish the game in 2005 :D

my morrowind runs rather smoothly, but it's absolutely terrible in solstheim. there are some areas that i can't run unto, because the game will crash. if i walk there it's fine, but then there are some areas that if i enter them from a certain direction it crashes and other bugs as well, all in solstheim. Other than that the game runs pretty smoothly.

Solstheim is a LOT more demanding then Vvardenfell because of all the vegetation to render. It is even worse in snow because the effects of snow is very demanding as well. The water and the shader effects involved don't help either.

Mournhold is the least demanding Morrowind "world".

Hm, my game runs relatively stable, though it sometimes crashed to the desktop . One thing I noticed though, was that sometime, for no apparent reason, the game will kill my sound device and become unplayably sluggish. When I save and exit MW, I still have no sound. After a reboot, it usually runs fine again. I have MW and Bloodmoon (fully patched), and quite a lot of plugins (Super Adventurers 3, Wilderness 2, several housing mods, to name a few), so the reason might be an incompatibility somewhere.

I've been working on the LGNPC mods for ages - the only game I played recently was Rome: Total War. Anyway, that ran quite slowly, so I defragged the hard drive and it improved dramatically. When I installed the White Wolf of Lokken Mod, a Bloodmoon based mod and started playing MW again, I found the game to be far, far more stable than I remembered it. Maybe it defragmentation did make a difference, maybe not, but for anybody with instability issues, its worth a try.

Well, maybe I am gonna start a defragmentation session tonight.
BTW, DM, you mentioned the White Wolf of Lokken Mod. Is it good ? I downloaded it the other day but havenĀ“t installed it yet because my Nord Raider is still prowling Vvardenfell. The screenshots were very interesting, to say the least :)

It was very good, there are a few tiny problems, some of the dialogue uses terminology which doesn't fit the MW atmosphere, and it is possible to aquire a quest reward multiple times by asking the NPC about it over and over, most of the dialogue doesn't change with the story - but these are very minor issues, I highly recomend it.

The last issue is dealt with in Emma's 1.04 update, as I recall.

You know, the instability of Morrowind actually count towards it - it crashes at least once every game, but it's still my favourite game. A true tribune to its greatness.

Save Often. Vvardenfell is a dangerous place.
And that my friends. Is that. :D
