Why bother with NPC's at all?

Seems like a waste of XP and money/items to have them. I'm just going through with 4 members of my own and ignoring them. Is there anything necessary about having them? Do you miss things if you don't?

There is little point in having npc's, I rarely use them myself. Besides it's easy to edit the temple.dll so that you can have a full eight characters of your own design. The co8 site has a thread describing how to do it.
