Put them on a table or in a cabinet or sell them if you put them on the ground after a while they disappear but if you put them on an easily acessible table or cabinet(I put all my stuff in the Adventurers Mart and it was fine) then they will stay but I ramble hope that helps

Notes:
1. The correct place for your items is a location with the "chest interface", i.e., when you try to get your items back, you should see the same "offering" interface as if you got your items from the chest. The tables have the "chest interface".
The wrong place for your items is a location with "pick up from the ground" interface, i.e., if you try to get your items back, you see the items on the ground. The items on the ground will be removed from the game after a while.
2. I strongly recommend chests. I do not trust tables. There is plenty of chests all around so there is no need to use tables. The chests are safe, but...
But in some situations, the area map completely changes even if it is not apparent visually. In this case, all chests, tables, etc. are reloaded with new items and your items stored there are lost. Examples:
a) after finishing de'Arnise Keep, the map of the keep changes. The same seems to be true for all strongholds.
b) the map of the Bodhi's Lair changes in ch. 6.
c) The Thieves Guild changes after your starting working for Bodhi.
When can you say that the map has changed? If you find a chest (table, etc.) that contains different items from those it containded so far. Perhaps, you'll find another examples of changes (please understand me well, I'm not trying to hide information - I simply do not know).
Summary:
a) Store your stuff in chests. Akathla seems to be safe. I always use the chests in the Cernd's Home at Waukeen's Promenade and I've never experienced loses.
b) Do not store your items in the de'Arnise Keep until you get the keep as your stronghold. The same applies on all strongholds - ranger's cabin, Planar Sphere, Mae'Var's Guild, etc.
c) If you store items in the Bodhi's Lair, take out all your stuff before leaving for Asylum.
d) Do not store your items in the Thieves Guild if you want to work with Bodhi.

I put all my stuff in the little sack behind the counter in the Copper Coronet. I've used it since chapter 2, and I'm on chapter 6 and all my stuff is still there
