He is the barkeep in Mae'Var's Guildhall.

I have buffed up me char. to 290 in pick pocket, and that is the max i believe. But still he catches me evey time, no matter what i steal, even a measly katana. So whats wrong here? Any help i most welcomed. Is there a global varity i can set?

Hmm...

Maybe you just can't steal from him?

Or the skill may wrap around above 255 - try him at, say skill 190 or so, and see if that works.

Never had a problem stealing from him. I gave Jan two gulps of potion, and made a couple of grabs.

Try a pickpocket from behind while hiding in shadows. I think this may give you a percent bonus but I'm unsure. D&D second edition rules as far as playing real roleplaying gives you bonuses but I don't know if SoA has this in its rules. This method usually solved the can't get my five finger discount problem, or perhaps I was just lucky and coincidental. Gortch may also be very observant.

I don't think he really means pickpocketing per se, but shoplifting off the menu. Am I right on that, Julian? Because if not, you're going about grabbing stuff from the barkeep the wrong way. Use the shoplifting menu. The chance of success is much higher, and you get to choose what you want.

I am using the shoplifting menu. And after i gulp a few potions it says i have pick pocket 290. btw i'm a blade, but the last time i was a blade i had no problem stealing from gortch at all. And when i steal other places i nver get cought. I'll try what you said nephtu

Pickpocketing

All thief skills wrap back to zero after 255... It has something to do with only allotting 8 bits to keep track of the skills...
