I didn't have any problem with charms in 'divine divinity', but can find no scheme for installing them.
What is it I have to do?

Exactly what you did in Divine Divinity. Just learn the skill, equip the item, and click on it. Then, move a charm into an open socket.

In dd you get a skill so the places unlock in bd there's no skill you can just place the charms over the closed slots and it'll hold them
