Yeah, I gather that anyone that doesn't start with a red circle is worth talking to first!

Do you have a save game to go back to? Did you already talk to Nickademus?

Sorry, I see that you did talk to Nickademus. Have you already chosen a reward from him?

well i spoke to the abishai first and also to the genie first - the abishai turned hostile and the genie refused to speak to any of my characters

i took the experience reward from nickademous, i can talk to him about a few different things but there is nothing about the altar that i can talk to him about

also when i ask him if you he wants help with his favour he just tells me that hes not ready yet....

i really hope i don't have to go back

The favour he's talking about is another matter, you don't have to worry about it right now. Actually, you'll leave the Temple without finding out more about it.

But you really should've talked to the genie... :(
If you decide to reaload a game, try to avoid killing the abishai, too, bc you can get some xp for freeing them from the "voice" later.

What's weird for me is that if you kill a character critical to reaching the ond of the game, the game should stop and tell you to reload. --> For example, I killed King Lothar when he started to ruin the Embassy, and the game stopped with a warning, and I could do nothing but reload. <-- Now, if this conversation with the genie was essential to defeat the Altar, why doesn't the game stop, then?

Anyway, this is what the walkthrough says:

Inside this room is Ondabo --> the genie <--; who is talking with Aurilite Priests. They will run from the room when you enter. Talk with Ondabo about Aeij-Kllenzr't and find out that he is also called "Caged Fury". He is at an alter somewhere in the Ice Temple and if you speak his true name at the alter it will remove him. Do not upset or be rude to Ondabo or he will not talk with you. In the other two rooms on this side of the hallway you will find some books and scrolls. One of the rooms is locked and you have to use the dais to enter.

phildude,
You may not be able to complete this quest, but surely you wouldn't have to start over. I couldn't imagine the game allowing you to fail a critical part of the game w/o telling you to reload. I bet you can continue on without completing this quest.

You can still reload a prvious saved game, can't you? If you don't have one, I'm sure any of us can help you out.

But if you're determined to play all over, that's fine :) Start again with the same party so that they'll become even stronger by the time they get to the Ice Temple again :p (At least that's what I did in order to complete the Battle Sqares challenge.

By the way, I finished the whole Battle Squares with my 11th lvl sorcerer (mirror image, haste, skulltrap (before choosing each square, place one or two or three ...on the center so when a monster appears, he takes it right in the face even with resistence...) Malison and Disintigrate (even Gelugons don't really like that spell) works well along with the club of disruption (reward for level 6 completed (so do it first...)))) well now try and see the power of the sorcerer..

Bye

Alternatives

There are other ways to complete the quest instead of just saying the name. As the genie says, you can have a priest defoul the alter. All you need to do is select the party and use the sword on the alter (blue circle).

Another I've heard works is telling the altar you have killed all the priestesses (of course you have to have actually done this)

Both these ways should work, but I'm not sure if you receive as much exp.
