Strange hit point rolling?

Does ToEE use some strange algorithm for rolling hit points? I've had several level-ups where the same character gets a "1" for new level hit points, and if I re-load and re-level I still get a 1. He's a multi-class fighter-rogue: does anyone know if the program has rules for determining hit points?

Usually, if you want to get the maximum amount of health points per level-up, you'll likely be reloading pretty often. I usually make an extra save-file with the highest number of health that I gain, with which I then save over my original file. After that, I usually erase this extra save file, and that's it.

As for the programming of health points, there seems to be no mentioning of it in the manual. Remember that the die calculations determine what you get for new hit points, so it's really random.

- for a fighter level up you should get 1D10 HP + CON modifier

- for a rogue level up you should get 1D6 HP + CON modifier

...a negative CON modifier will reduce the amount of HP - but you always will get 1 HP !

Yeah, I'm an old time gamer, so I'm familiar with the standard hp rolls, but what puzzles me is that I seem to get a roll of 1 preternaturally often. I reloaded a save game five times in a row, and got a 1 for hp every single time. No one else has noticed something like this?

Maximum hit points for Cleric and Ranger?

My thanks to SilverDragon72 for posting the maximum hit points and leveling up for Fighter and Rogue? Does anyone know what the maximum is for Cleric and Ranger?

Clerics and rangers both have d8 hit dice, so they'll get 1d8+con modifier per class level.

All info on classes and such can be found here:
http://www.d20srd.org

Also, in case anybody is reading these old threads and wondering about the unanswered questions contained herein, the random number generator in ToEE is fairly bad, IMO, and you will get a lot of 1s and a lot of max rolls for HP when you level up. There is a patch out there which gives you maximum HP at each level. You can find a link to it over at co8.org.
Also, the console can be used to set you HP to whatever you like. Heck, set it to 8000 and take on St. Cuthbert solo like I did. :)
For details, see the sticky thread above regarding console commands.

Cheers.

It was a dumb question

Thanks, Lord Plothos, I should have been able to figure it out for myself with the info on Fighters and Rogues I alread had.

My vote is that it is either a bug -NO this game isnt' BUGGY- or wierd in its assignments like LP said OR

The negative HP modifer by a low CON on your character as mentioned by silverdragon.

If you have a character with a 7 CON (why would you TAKE such a character anyway?!) that's -2 on each roll so all 3s, 2s, and 1s are gonna be 1 HP and if you are rolling for your Rogue class that is 50% of the time. Even an 9 CON gets you a -1 so that's 1/3 of the time with rogue levels.

concerning HP rolls: it may sound quite curious - but my impression (last playing ToEE a *very* long time ago) was that it seems, that the area where you take the level influences the HP rolls: taking the level in the temple for example seems to have a negative impact while if you are outside full HP seems to happen more often!

...ok - call me crazy - but as said: just my impression ;)

Different Experience for me

Hi Silver Dragon,

Don't think you're crazy, but think that may have just been your particular game. I just picked up ToEE again this weekend where I left off (Level 2 of the Temple dungeon) and just had most everyone hit level 8. I did the leveling right there in the Temple. Four of my pc characters all maxed or were real close. Only Elmo who got 7 hps total seemed to not get close to the max, (don't remember his con but think he gets some kind of bonus). I believe LP hit it the issue dead on about the random generator and personally I think the game gets stuck in a rut when leveling. My 8th level Paladin has 105 hp (18 con) of a possible 112, and every time he's leveled it was max or close.

smtn is not ok with theese dice! mi fighter almost always gets a 10 roll at the first time (no loading needed). My barbarian gets a 11 or 12 with few loads. But my clerics (d8) needs at least 10 loads to get a 6,7 or 8. And this **** is happening from level 2 to 6 which I am currently at. It can't be random!
