Well right now I'm playing Thief: Deadly Shadows, and probably not even close to done with it because it takes forever to play but are there any other stealth-type games out there that even compare? The only other one out there that I can think of is Splinter Cell.

I was going to suggest Splinter Cell.
I've only played the first and it was quite okay.
Although - even if the behaviour of the enimies was somewhat decently scripted - it still ment that the AI was less then intelligent (to say the least), which subtracts immensly from that game.
I've not tried Pandora Tomorrow or what the following are called, so can't say about them.
But it was certainly a decent game.

I hear that there are some very stealthy vampire clan options in Vampire: The Bloodlines, but I haven't gotten it yet. Supposedly, you can choose stealth as opposed to combat in a number of quests.

yea its mainly thief and SCell series.u can play a good sneak character in deus ex, but its not how its meant to be played except through some parts...
there was a remake of an old thief-like game called The Sting...but thats more a fun way of sneaking without the real atmosphere...

Pandora Tomorrow is pretty damn good but then I loved the first one, the enemy AI is much improved to the point where if one of their freinds goes missing they remember where he origionally where and go looking for him even if you haven't made a sound. They do give up after a while but it's still pretty hairy at times in a confined space.

Yeah I would have to agree with most of you. I always try to give these stealth games a try, but almost always end up frustrated, as I like a little more action. That said, I have enjoyed two especially:

1) Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow - I know this has been discussed already in here, but i really felt like i was going off on a limb when i got this. my uncle hooked me up with a gift certificate to the sears web site so i got it there for pretty cheap (couldnt say no...heeheh). while i liked this game a lot, i didnt like it as much as MGS2 and 3.

2) Metal Gear Solid 3 - I had a blast playing MGS2, and heard so much hype about this that when i saw it at eb a few weeks ago, i had to buy it. the reason i believe this to be a better 'stealth' game is because the missions dont END if you are discovered. you can hide and avert 'disaster'. Yeah it takes a long time to shake your enemies, but you ALSO have the option of popping a cap in them and booking it to your destination.

just my thoughts....i dunno.

I'd suggest the first two Thief games. I played the first Splinter Cell and I was a bit dissapointed. The game is just too linear. It's like walking down a really long corridor with wery few options....

The Rainbow 6 games have a fair amount of stealth to them too. Though not as much as splinter cell..

the tenchu games are pretty good. most of them. two kind of sucked. but three was great. and there's a new one with 2 lady ninjas. i think it's called Tenchu: Sweet Lady Ninjas

Tenchu is not very stealth.

i dont think u can run around about 2m behind a guy without being noticed.

the game is fun in multiplayer mode though.

I just got Metal Gear Solid 3, and I am very, very impressed with it. there are so many things you can do there's a truly silly number of ways to get through many of the areas. I don't know about the lifespan yet, and I'm hoping the plot won't go all silly like the last one, but I'm loving the thing so far. reccomended.

of course, you could just get some of the time-devouring Commandos series - the earlier series is harder, but quite compelling.

sneak em ups

Thief - The Dark Engine
first thief game
good story and a good challenge

Thief 2 - the Metal Age
instead of dealing with mad tree-huggers, you get to take on the might of the Mechanists. those guys love to deal out a righteous thrashing.

Thief 3 - Deadly Shadows
probably as good as it will get

Splinter cell - Pandora Tomorrow
mission-based, tense, somewhat linear, but full of modern gadgets.
not a bad alternative to the thief series, but not as spooky

hidden & dangerous (1 and 2)
it may not be billed as a sneaker, but being a wartime SAS operative involved quite a lot of sneaking. missions where you steal uniforms and hope to get through before you are sussed are pretty much the same territory. same skill-set of patience, awareness and strategic thinking required. some missions involving disguises and/or silenced weapons are just as sneaky as the more obvious sneakemups. there is a lot of satisfaction to be gained by knocking out sentries with a silenced sniper-rifle and then putting a bullet in the back of a Nazi skull from close range.

Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines
pretty obvious that sneaking around is second nature to vamps. lots of opportunities to sneak and suck. great game, if somewhat buggy.

Thief 3 - Deadly Shadows
I've played it, but it bored me pretty soon. You can play it 2 styles: sneaky or barbarian, but you can also do it both, sneak first, club everyone later on. I have to say that clubbing everyone is way too easy and tempting and I often ended up running through empty districts.

hidden & dangerous 2
This is a great game. Stealthy too. The missions are all different and not too easy. Quite realistic and you get to play with multiple characters. That's when your tactical skills come in handy, because you'll often need to position them at strategical locations. To get it perfect took me a lot of restarting, but it was very satisfying. When I came to the credits I was like: HEY?! Gimme more! Alas, multiplayer mode didn't work with my not so legal version. I should've bought it. :(

Let's try to keep the spam to SYM ;)

I know I'm one of the more tolerant ones in regards to spam, but if you're going to spam in here, 'least make it game related ;)

I suppose you could play Deus Ex in a stealthy fashion as well as its predecessor System Shock 2. The fact that they have excellent storylines for their genre is a plus, in addition to having better combat then the Thief Series. But if you're looking for a pure sneaker, then those two aren't the way to go.
