Tribunal question about loot.

Hello.
I started Tribunal last week. One thing I've discovered to my surprise is that, unlike Morrowind, if you leave things on the floor in this game they can disappear. I had 4 items that were too expensive to sell at the time that I left on the floor of a dealers shop. I came back later to find that they were gone.
So since scattering things on the floor safely doesn't appear to be an option in Tribunal, how do others here handle this? Does someone know of a chest or closet somewhere that doesn't respawn that would make a good storage area? Or perhaps I should just find a room somewhere with a door I can lock and leave the items on the floor there.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.
Miciah
