Romancing Aerie - some questions upon completing the game

Well, I finally finished the game last night. Very very very late at night, as the final battle took over 2 hours to play out (and I had to do it twice...). Bittersweet ending, as Aerie is turned to stone and remains a statue in hell, forever... Almost (but not quite) makes me want to replay the entire final battle just to get her out alive....
Why so concerned? Well, this romance thing....it just didn't end the way it was supposed to...
The romance with Aerie progressed fairly quickly, and at the key point I made what I understand was the right decision - put off sleeping with her until things are settled. I even had Haer Dalis in the party, and we started going through the "flirting" scripts. As I understand, I should have eventually had to fight a duel...
But, the duel never ocurred, and I am not sure why...in fact, nothing relevant occurred for the rest of the game - with the possible exception of the dragon egg quest...
Ahhhh....the dragon egg quest. At one point, I had to decide to sleep with the Drow (Phaere) or fight her. Fighting her brings the entire city down on my head, and makes it impossible to get the eggs and escape. Sleeping with her pisses Aerie off, of course...
I had assumed that Aerie would "forgive" me after we destroyed the Drow, but no further interactions occurred for the rest of the game...
So - where did I blow the romance? If it was in the Drow city, how do you possibly complete the quest and still maintain her affection (or is it possible.....)
Anyway, a great game overall - looking forward to the next release...

Weeeell... The trick of keeping the romance going without cheating on your loved one is to make a huge sacrifice when it comes to the macho department.
Tell Phaere that yer cursed and "can't get it up", so to speak. She'll hiss and frown but Airie will rejoice and cheer. It's little white lies like that one wich makes it possible to get trough the game in one piece, no?
Never heard about dueling Haer'Dalis for Airies love but I sure don't think the bard thought that challange trough very well.

Hmmmm...interesting....
I tried the "can't get it up" routine - and Phaere just said I was a bad liar and continued to press the issue - so I gave up on that route. I thought I had exhausted all my options in the scripts, but I will need to check that out...
As far as the duel with Haer'Dalis, it is mentioned in the NPC info on this website.

Could depend on your Charisma if she believes it or not...

Let me get this straight: You cheat on her, leave her a pillar of stone in Hell, and want to know why you two don't live happily ever after?
I think you know your own answer.

Well whattya know. I never seen that particular passage on Airies page, having been away from this site for some time now, but it does sound kind of promising. Perhaps I'll let Haer'Dalis join the next time just to check it out.
If Phaere tells you that she doesn't belive you then I fear that your character might have to few points into charisma. Having always played a character with high numbers in that attribute I am not aware how to escape that bothersome choice with other ways. *Sigh* It does not seem fair by the developers to add an unsolvable situation for a player so I do hope that there's a way around it.

Hmm. It must reflect Charisma. Maybe Intelligence? I don't remember whether or not I was wearing the ring of human influence when I spoke with her the first time or not. The second time I was a paladin, so Charisma's not a problem.
Anyway, both times, I selected the "I can't" and "There's someone else". When she asks who, I could either say "(insert love interest here" and be back in a no win situation, or say "Someone you don't know". If you choose that route, she says something along the lines of "Ah, I see why you left (whatever that Dark elf town was). You have been collared by a haidmaiden of Lloth. I am tempted to break the enchantment, but I don't have time right now for a battle. I guess I'll have to settle for someone else for the immediate moment..." Then it goes off into the regular dialog about meeting the Matron Mother.
When you come out, you get good reactions from your love interest.

There are a number of Charisma related dialogues in the Underdark and rejecting Phaere is one of them. If you have the Ring of Human Influence I strongly suggest you wear it while dealing with with the Drow.

I cheated on Jaheira and the romance continued after that, although I never got to sleep with her as I just wanted to finish the darn game by then. She must take her sweet time!

I gave Pharea a good seeing to and still kept romancing Viconia. I think Aerie is the only NPC not mature enough to deal with drow sexuality... - Curdis (hey, if boffing a deformed elven child is your thing...)
