Have you actually beat the main quest? (possible spoilers)

I have finally made it to the point where I am just a few steps away from handing Mr. Ur his just desserts... after playing the game for around 6 months or more...
It has taken so long because I have done all kinds of other things, and I've had the compulsive habit of beginning new characters. I even broke my promise to myself, that I would stick with the one PC, last week when I began to experiment with a high elf.
So what I am wondering is, are there any other people here who have not actually completed the main quest?

I have heard Argonians are fun, but I haven't tried them. I can't seem to get into playing beast races or orcs for some reason. Right now though, I am trying hard *not* to begin new characters of any kind.
Hmm.. well I doubt as well that there are many people in my situation, but I thought it might be interesting to see
I seem to recall that Gwalchmai had the game at least as long as I did before actually finishing it.

I was level 20 when I first realised there was something like a 'main quest', but I found it to be very enjoying and well-built. Ofcourse it was extremely easy but I still had some trouble with mr. Ur

Well it took me roughly a year after I got the game to actually finish it. The reason being that I restarted like 1000 times before I found a character that I just simply fell in love with. It would have taken me even longer if I had decided to do all my house quests first, but I was just so close to the end that I decided to abandon them in favor of finishing the main quest.

Uh, I still haven't finished it...
When I start a new game ( and I do this quite often) I play for about 2 weeks, then I find some new mods and well, that's enough to "convince" me to start a new character...

i actually roamed through soltsheim (after finishing tribunal) without beating aledged mr.Ur....so that would mean..what...about a year of playing in total, and i still haven't seen the ending animation for morrowind

I have had Morrowind for 2-3 years, and in the first 9 months, all I did was create a new characters, I didn't always play them alot, just for about 20 mins, and so after that 9 months I FINNALY settled on a character, which I decided to stop and make a new one once I finnaly figured out what I wanted, a super-mage high-elf, and with that character I finnaly settled to lvl.40, and only 3 billion characters later did I actually bother with the main quest, which is actually on of my recent characters, and I have yet to feel the urge to go farther than the trials you must do in the main quest....

Well, I didn't bother with making a lot of characters in the beginning, I settled for my second guy. (my first on was killed by a kvama forager and a guar) which was a Redguard Warrior. However I avoided the main quest because I wanted to be as strong as possible. When I first got the expansions, I first installed Bloodmon and finished that (because it looked cooler than tribunal) then I installed tribunal, (which forced me to reinstall the whole game) and completed that, and after that I figured it was time to deal with Mr. Ur.
So I did it backwards

well... from what i can remember, i'd always play a little bit and then not play for like 2 weeks then play a little bit more and then not play for a long time again. Well all in all it took me about 3 months to beat (and no i didn't use the strategy guides

)

lol! Okay, sounds as though I'm not actually the only person to play the game like this

Though, I did actually have a date with Mr.Ur last night.... since my PC is level 46... it was a bit anticlimactic. It is too bad the game doesn't set the difficulty according to the player''s level...
More in terms of my original question.. I really love the open-ended nature of the game.. but I'm wondering if maybe there shouldn't be at least a little more pressure and a sense of urgency to actually finish the main quest....

Well that would defeat the open-ended part of the game wouldn't it?
But I agree about the whole game should scale in difficulty to PC lvl. Oh well, maybe they will do it in Oblivion.

When I first started the confoudned game, I spent about 6 months trying to figure it out while getting "whacked" by every blasted "Cliff Racer" that came along...I got so frustrated I uninstalled it, returned to it a year later out of sheer boredom, and managed to beat it in 5 weekends.
@DW: I DEFINATELY agree...the whole ending seemed SO anti-climatic...seriously *spoilers...kind of?* one stinky little cutscene and a pat on the back? Thanks, but I'll pass! Here's hoping to the main storyline be a more central focus in Oblivion!

Same here, been on and off playing the game for about 2 years now, but only have one char that actually beat the main quest. Once, the quest broke (some crucial NPC didn“t wanna talk to me) and otherwise I have been busy exploring, checking out mods, doing House Quest (my first stronghold is about to be finished...yay me !)
@Asriel : You installed Bloodmoon, then afterwards installed Tribunal and had to re-install the entire game ? I have just ordered Tribunal, but have MW and BM already installed... so maybe I should wait with the Tribunal installation until I am finished with my current PC (I want Tribunal mainly for mods) ?

Reinstall in this order, Morrowind then Tribunal THEN Bloodmoon. Bloodmoon updates the game version to a much later one than Tribunal when installed, that's why u need to reinstall the entire thing.
The saves will work after u reinstall the game, just back them up somwhere and then copy them into the save directory after the reinstall. (Can't remember if the uninstall deleted all saves)
Didnt bother beating the main quest until I heard that one of the quests would grant 100% against those damn diseases, blight etc
Took quite a long time to beat the whole game though !

when i first started, i chose dark elves, cuz ive read on mainsite bout game and races and knew exactly with whom to play with. took me only bout 1 1/2 (playing round 5 hrs a day) month to finish main and bout 40% side quests and get to lvl25. sweet thing is that i collected full Daedric armor with Vile Mask

. Later i got Tribunal (got that sweet Trueflame) and Bloodmoon (which was very short, took me only 5 days). Later i returned to main island to join any other Guilds/Houses i can (originally i joined fighters). After 2 more months i had 400-500 pages of journal

When we first got Morrowind... ummmm, probably 2 years ago? Yes! Holy cow, that long ago already? Anyway, my husband always managed to beat me to the xbox, so I watched him play through the main quest right away. Myself, because I had seen everything that happened through his game, I didn't beat the main quest of the game until about a year into our having the game. That's what's awesome about Morrowind, though, even though my silly husband technically spoiled it for me, (as he does most other games

) there's so much more to do, all kinds of cool artifacts to collect, neato quests to complete, guilds and temples and such that I have never even joined yet. Pphhhht, and he only ever did thieve's guild and the main quest... ha ha ha haaa!!!!
Have you tried Argonian?
You should...
I agree. I originally chose Argonian because of the poison and disease resistances(and because I wanted a characteer who looked like Reptile from Mortal Kombat DA [in which I have succeeded] ), but I found that the increased athletics REALLY sped up things up (namely my running speed

)
Getting back on topic...
I only just completed the main quest last week after having the game anywhere between 6-10 months (I kinda lost track). I was kinda disapointed with the fact you don't really get any cool stuff from beating the game (except Wraithguard). I found the greatest reward of beating the game, for me, was having the four Ordinators around the Vivec temple stop giving me cr@p all over one suit of 'holy' armour.

@Boernica,
you know, I have sometimes thought it would be nice to have a partner who is also interested in gaming, but reading your post, I'm seeing the advantages of being not being in that situation
@Alien_Newborn,
well I don't know... you get some pretty nice toys in the process of completing the main quest. Sunder and Keening anyone? Plus, if you go after Ur's vampire minions you obtain some fairly powerful jewellry, and let's not forget the Heart Ring Ur drops before heading into the final chamber..
My complaint is mostly that the ending of the main quest is so ho hum, which is likely related to the fact that there is no real pressure to get on with it. As I said, I love the open-ended nature of the game, but I do think that the main quest should have been a bit more prioritised, and the looming threat portrayed as being just a little bit more urgent.
More on topic, I think this is partly why so many of us have taken as long to get around to the main quest.
