Not Enough Free Hard Disk Space?!

Well I took a break, and went to start it back up again and ERROR. "Not enough free hard disk space. Fallout requires 20MB free hard disk space." What the hell's that all about? I have 9.36GB free space. I don't see a problem.

Well that answers that question.... delete temp files and empty recycle bin. But why when I have 9.36GB free space is the game not finding 20MB to use? Weird

It isn't finding all your free space because it is an old game that didn't know how to use large harddisk (think the line was/is 2GB)
It is a common problem with older software and new hardware
I've often had to install old software on harddrives where it said I didn't have enough free space because it couldnt' meassure the harddrive size proberly

Again!!!!
Well it happened again, and this time I've got nothing in my temporary folders or recycle bin to get rid of. I kinda know why it's happening, but I don't know how to fix it. Any ideas?

IIRC I had the same thing last time. Just install it; I think it'll work.

I think it's 4 GB because that's the limit of FAT16.

Do you mean reinstall it? And my hard drive is partitioned as NTFS, would that make a difference?
I did make one discovery. Upon reinstalling I noted that the installer recognized 2147MB free space and the humongous install only requires 644.3MB space. I don't see how the program could mistake 1500MB for less than 20. AHHH!!! Let's see what reinstalling accomplishes.
Well reinstalling accomplished nothing. I think this might have been the problem that made me not play it that I ran into when I first got the game.

Well I figured out a work around. I don't know why I didn't try this before(probably because I didn't think it would make a difference), but it runs fine from the autorun menu. So all I have to do is open the cd tray close it and click play whenever I want to. A little more than I'd like to have to do but I'll live.

Now that work-around stopped working. What am I to do?

Usually I just click the "install anyway" button (or whatever the choice is) and the game installs fine. I am also on NTFS and don't appear to have any problems.
Try a re-install and just ignore the "No HD space" error.

I can install it fine, it's just real testy about when it wants to display the error therfore inhibiting me from playing the game. I think you misunderstood. The error appears when I try to play the game from either the start menu or the autorun menu, and therefore prevents the program from running. Why the game needs free hard drive space is beyond me. But lately I've noticed it just depends on the mood my computer's in.

Sorry mate, I did misunderstand you. What OS are you running, W2K or XP?
Usually a game need HD space for it's swap file, but I don't think Fallout 1 had a large one.

What about various compability modes? Do they help at all?

Compatability modes?
Compatability modes?
If running WinXP (and possibel Win2K - can't remember)
Right click the .exe file or shortcut, then select properties and then compability.
Then there are various settings you can use.
I've never used these much - because I've for some reason not really had much problems with getting games to run.

I've just got the "Not enough disk space" error before too.
I opened up the fallout.cfg file with notepad and looked for the system settings. "i.e. [system] "
Inside you'll find a parameter "free_space=20480" (I think that was the value)
I changed the value to "0" and haven't gotten the error since. The game runs fine.

Yes, that's one way to solve the problem, but I wouldn't recommend it if there is any other way to solve the problem. I used that trick, and the game worked fine for some time, but then suddenly I started to get strange memory errors, which seems to be caused by the way I solved the problem.
Compatability modes is one way to solve it, or for me it worked. I used IIRC Win95 mode. But it's not quaranted that it will work on your situation.

Although this is regurgitating an old thread, I thought the information would be helpful anyway:
1.02 Patch for Fallout 2 States:
-The problem where game wouldn't run properly on some /NTFS/large hard-drive setups has been fixed.
Always patch your old games! Be careful though, all previously saved games will be unplayable (1.02 reads them as 'old version') - so its best to patch up F2 before you get too far into the game...

JooB

Where can I find fallout.cfg? I've tried changing compatibility, doesn't change anything (95, and 98 compat just ignores the game). Stupid error

I have the memory error as well, but for me its fro Fallout 1. I'm going to try the method of changing the characters in notepad, ive already tried the properties method; and failed.
ok the notepad method worked just fine.
