What's Your Favorite Video Game?

Hey everybody,

I recently caught a few ads on Spike TV for their upcoming Video Game Awards (it airs Dec. 14th but I'm not sure what time, check out their website if you want) and thought to start this thread to see who everyone thinks should win the award for game of the year. Maybe we could tally up the replies here and then compare them to which game actually wins that night? It might be cool too to send these results to Spike TV after we're done, especially if our favorites aren't on their list. So I'm going to dig around and try to find a way to contact them too.

Here's this year's choices from Spike's website (if you don't agree, just put down your favorite):

Burnout 3: Takedown (Electronic Arts)
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (Rockstar Games)
Half-Life 2 (Vivendi Universal Games)
Halo 2 (Microsoft Game Studios)
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (Konami)

Also, what's your all-time favorite? (I'm predicting Super Mario Brothers and CS will top the list here.)

Thanks everyone and I'll keep you posted on who wins in case you won't catch it.

Jason

Well, out of that list for the years best games, definately Half-Life 2 in my opinion. What I saw of that was just mind-blowing. I wish I had the money to afford the upgrades I need to play that well.

All time though? Shining Force 3 Part 1 for Sega Saturn. The whole series I'd have to say of what I played ( as in 1-3).

The last platform game I played was Donkey Kong (and loved it!) from the original to the three part SNES versions...though I am yet to try the Game Cube release - the bongo drum does not appeal to me for some reason... (I lost interest in consoles a long time ago, maybe my son should be answering this question lol :D ! )

Keep in mind that, that is a Spike Tv's list and they won't be picking games that are so much good as they would pick games that make them look more masculine for playing them.

I did love that Zelda game. I think it is the best zelda ever.. As far as fave of all time, that is hard, but maybe Dune 2000.. I don't really like FPS and it's hard for an RPG to be perfect, but I love RTS and Dune 2000 is my favorite of that genre..

I haven't played any games this year (I just realized and now I feel sad :( ), but for an all time favorite...

Planescape: Torment

Also, I think this thread is in the wrong forum, but seeing as no mod has acted on it I may be wrong.

I actually voted on that site and for GOTY went with Halo 2. I know Half-Life 2 is an amazing game but being in a Halo 2 clan with close friends out weighs the great look and feel of HL2.

As for all time fave I'd have to go with Blaster Master (NES).

Am I the only one that likes GTA here?

I am somewhat of a GTA veteran so maybe that's it, but I really like the supreme sarcasm that this game offers. Also I like it because it was the first in it's genre. (at least as far as I know)

I actually despise games like Manhunt and the like because they saw the success of GTA and wanted to try it for themelves. However, what they did wrong was the fact that they focused upon violence and violence....... and violence.

The violence in GTA is not so important to me, what is, is the almost endless possibilites that the game offers (try driving a camper up on the top of a mountain, jump off it , with the car, and parachute out of it James Bond style :D )

Although I can't say that I have played Halo, Half-life or Metal Gear Solid so I can't rally say anything about them.

Actually, I'm over the whole GTA series. In all honesty from the original the only thing I can think of that was a major change was the ability to jump. Of course there has been times where I wanted nothing more than the genre of GTA.

The manufature, left out name intensionally, of the GTA series IMO is taking advantage of the buying populous. This is prior to playing GTASA, of course but here is what I see. The same basic engine being used over and over for each title. Yes there are many new abilities that can be done from game to game but with the evolvement of action should come a change in look and I dont mean a new skin with a hawaiian shirt. I believe this manufacture will continue this process until the titles begin to lose sales. Once this happens the will almost be forced to increase the look with a new engine rather than rehash the old.

****GTA: San Andreas - I liked GTA3, then GTA: Vice City came out and it was even better (it isn't just a reskin, it is an entirely different person and storyline), and then San Andreas comes out and it is insane! I like the addition of riding a BMX bicycle around, you can even shoot hoops in a basketball court, you can go for a swim (which if you got waist deep in water in the other ones, you would die), there is really good assisted aiming, party-games (like DDR..but with hydrolic low riders!), relationships (where you can date like 5 chicks at the same time), and so much more. It is a game with so much in it that just going through the story alone won't satisfy the player enough to stop playing.

**I played Halo 2, and now that I have beaten it with my friend, I just don't really care about seeing it anymore.

*Half-Life 2 - I really don't care about this series mostly because I am not REALLY a FPS type guy.

*Burnout 3 - I just don't really care about this series at all either.

*Metal Gear Solid 3 - The first one never interested me, why should I bother with 2 or 3?

**** - 4 stars, you can play over and over and over and over again and still find stuff to do.
*** - 3 stars, there aren't any on my list, heh.
** - 2 stars, the game is fun while playing through it, then it is boring.
* - 1 star, never played it..but I am sure some people see something in it.

And I am voting on them based on singleplayer only. Because once a FPS game goes multiplayer, it is the same thing as every other FPS multiplayer frag-fest game out there..but I guess you get different weapons and look different. But at the core it is just a bunch of guys running around with rocket launchers and jumping around like superballs.

I liked GTA 1, then 2 came out, it was a little better but nearly Identical to 1, then 3 came out and that was good, but I don't see why they never made 3 any better when they put out VC and SA. There may be new storylines, but the storyline is not really why I would be playing these types of games. I see them as similar to FPS. The added features are nice, but I would rather have an innovative game with better graphics than a rehash of the last one with a modification of another one..

Is there anyone else who liked the nes game "North and South"? I thought it was very good. Probably the best video game I've played.

Damn straight! The zelda games were some of the most awesome games ever. The other day i found my old gold edition cartridge, and went straight down to the store to buy a pre-owned N64 to play on. Even over halo 2 :D

If that game is about the American Civel war, then I know it. My brother played it much on the amiga, I was a bit young so I hardly played it.
