crash and burn

I have the platinum edition, have updated to most recent patch....every time i start the original game, when i try to go from barracks to the next room at the very beginning of the game, the game shuts down. Just flickers and takes me back to the desktop, no error message.
Running a piece of crap machine with windows xp....any suggestions????? I played the original version a long time ago with no such problem.
