Online play : is it possible to search ongoing games

How can I find and join in sessions of games, which are played by any one. Is the only way to join a game or host by knowing the ip addy. In another words only friends may play game. No All-seeing eye software or port pingers which find ongoing games. Vice versa can I advertise that my game is on.
