silly snake quest

I killed the snake in the temple before accepting the quest. Now, whenever I kill the earth temple priest that the snake is dead, my paladin "falls".
Is it because I am lying about this quest, or is it because I'm a paladin and shouldn't do what the evil priest wants me to do? Any help on this one would be nice!
Thanks

Paladins generally don't serve evil causes. You could see it as your Paladin turning away from the purity of their order to obey a dark & corrupt power.
Don't worry, though, there are plenty of ways to reach level 10 in this game.

so does this mean that if you have a paladin in the party you cannot take on the "evil" quests in the temple?

Thanks

Absolutely correct. Besides, killing those priests give some nice experience as well.
And you'll find even more ways to gain juicier XP by doing non-evil quest & battles lower in the temple.

There is a quest for two Fire Temple (lesser) priests that won't make your Paladin fall, which involves a little gambling game to regain another priest's mace, and gets you a nifty item. The name of these priests are Antonio and Tubal. Other than this quest, all other priests in the temple are best off dead.
Overall, don't cooperate with the high priests and slaughter them if you have a Pally in your party.
