You have to join a house (Hllialu)(forgeve the spelling), and do a whole bunch of missions and eventually you have to find various things to build it. (deeds, etc), this is just an overall review, so please, someone step in.

My favorite is Hlaalu. Light spoilers below:
Okay, you can do this earlier if you meet certain requirements but by the time you get to rank 7 you must build a stronghold to move any further. Councilor Curio will tell you to do so when you ask for advancement at that point. Go to balmora and in the council house is a well-dressed Dunmer(sorry, can't remember his name right now), talk to him. Stronghold will be a discussion topic. He will tell you to get a land deed from the treasurer in Hlaalu Canton in Vivec, and a construction contract from duke Vedam Dren in Castle Ebonheart. Bring those to him and he will order construction to begin. You have to wait a few days between steps on these quests but will be prompted by journal entries to talk to him again. He then sends you to check on contruction at the site. It's built on Odai Plateau which is west of the Odai river and south of Balmora, just past the wooden foot-bridge. You must then cure the blighted queen in an egg mine and recruit a miner. I recommend going to gnisis as you can get the miner there and get the spell for free by clicking the middle panel of the shrine in the temple then clicking the mask that appears when the panel slides down. Once this is done report back to Balmora and talk to the builder again. IIRC, you have to be promoted to councillor to move any further, but the stronghold is very usable at this stage. Then I think you have to hire a warrior and follow him to a cave to kill some bandits. I think that's all of it. Forgive me if I missed anything. I'm doing this from memory.

Well, this is of course only for house Hlallu. You can also get strongholds for the other two great houses too ( some crappy house in Bal Isra for Redoran and Tel Uvirith, which is built on Uvirith's Grave, for Telvanni (Best. Residence. Ever. [especially with mods like Green Uvirith, Uvirith Unleashed, Uvirith Expanded, etc.] ) The methods to obtain these strongholds are a bit different, but generally the same.

I dont mean to offend you.. Alien_newborn.. But Redoran stronghold is BEST.. And anyone who doesn't agree with me is 100% idiot..
But main thing is that people like different things..
(and more bull**** that every body knows)
But i wouldn't belive everything that they say on this forum.. mainly when people talk about strongholds.. you would be better to try things out by yourself..
So try each house.. but you can only be in one house per each character.. but you could see other houses when you go and kill other stronghold leaders in their home..
But i am quite sadly if you will start to live in mushroom...

I'm not offended at all, because I've never actually had the redoran stronghold. I had heard from a few of my pals that it kinda sucked (they may have just meant its location), and so I just kinda embodied their opinions. Of all the strongholds I've seen, my favorite is still Uvirith.

I love the location of Rethan Manor, the Hlaalu Stronghold. My character is pretty fast and I can get to Balmora in about 20 seconds if I run.

20 seconds.. man you are slow... my argonian does it on 10 sec... (long time ago.. it could be longer if you count possible loading times)

Telvanni house is the greatest. The location sucks, but the stronghold itself is awesome. Plus you got some dwarven centurion robots(or whatever they are called in game) guarding it.

I wish there was a way people would attack you in the stronghold.. (other that dark brothers from the mainland) That way your security can be put to the test.

The original question for this thread has been answered. Since it's now pretty much spam, it's also pretty much closed.
