How do I get past the sunfire guardian? Ive tried sneaking by him fireballing him and detect invisibility and nothing works.

You don't. Fight and kill him. It's that simple.

I cant target him with anything though because he is invisible.

you have to put together the mask. kill the various djinni guardians around and put the mask pieces together, then put the mask on and you'll see him. check out the walkthrough or strategy section here for more in-depth stuff.

I believe true seeing works as well.
Try any non-fire based area affect spells. i.e. Holy Smite, Cloudkill, etc.

Cloudkill would most likely work too, but you miss out on 8000exp per genie you kill. I think there's six of them, so you would miss out on some good exp.

My first time through, I hadn't quite figured out the mask completely, or I was hesitant to put the mask on, since I didn't know exactly what it did, so I couldn't see the guardian. IIRC, I hit him with Holy Smite a couple of times, then revealed him with either true seeing or invis. purge, and finished him off.
