What's so good about Bards?

I wanted to make a bard, but I wasn't sure. Thought that you guys may be able to tell me what's so good about a bard, anyway. I can think of many classes better, but I need to know what is good about them.

Bards are different. They aren't great fighters, but they aren't bad. They can cast mage spells, but they don't get high level mage spells. They can pickpocket, but no other thieve's skills. Their lore is great and their bard song is certainly helpful, even awesome at high levels. Basically, they are "a jack-of-all-trades, but a master of none". Personally I like having the masters, but the bard is certainly interesting and versatile. I would go with the blade, myself, just for the combat bonuses they get. If you use them right, they are very effective.

IMO : nothing

Now a flood of posts will come down with pro's and con's. Image

To be more serious : A bard is a mixture class , he can do a lot. Depending on the kit he can fight, backstabb, cast spells, handle traps, identify items many items without a spell and a lot more. I know people who loves bard because of this access to lot of different possibilities.
But he is not specialised in all that. He can't use magic like a true mage (less spells). He has less hp, attacks, damage etc than a true fighter ...
Now its up to you and what do you prefer :
Characters which are really good in one thing (and restricted to that) or a character which can do a bit from everything but nothing really good ?

There was a huge thread and resulting popularity of bards and especially Jester's over at the Baldurs Gate Dungeon BG2 Tavern. In a thread created by BraveSirRobin where he created a Jester and actually beat the game solo as a Jester. He chronicled his adventures as a Bard in the thread.

I would like to see that string. Doesn't it offend your characters if you don't let them join your party?
