I've just rescued Imoen, escaped the Asylum island and now I'm down in the Underdark and have a few questions.
Someone said that I just had to complete the silver dragon quest to get back to Athkatla, is that true?
Those gnomes (or where they dwarves?) said I should go to the Drow city, do I have to do that?
Is it possible to return to the Underdark after I get back to Athkatla?

Yes you only have to do the silver dragons' quest. But in order to complete that quest you must go to the Drow city and perform several other quests to get to your ultimate goal.
And yes you can return to the Underdark, only not by the map, you must walk from screen to screen: You go to the surface entance, to an underground cavern, another cavern and voila you're back in the Underdark.
