Just what is the frying pan? What does it do? Why is it there? Is it merely a weapon with a lot of augmentation slots? I found it while playing recently, and haven't figured out what to do with it. If there is even a use for it at all.

If you find every treasure clue (6 in all), it is a really strong weapon.

First you need to get all 6 clues before digging up the pan. If you do it before hand its worthless.
Second as to its purpose. Thats a good question. With all the cuts to the game before it was released.
Thirdly you can say man now I can make some fried chicken with my frying pan
