Questions about weapon proficiencies

Is it better to allocate some points to weapon style or focus upon the weapon proficiencies themselves?
Also is there any REAL benefit of attaining mastery or grand mastery in one weapon as opposed to specializing in a number of fighting styles with a range of weapons?
Thoughts would be appreactiated

Due to botched(?) values you really don't get too much value in maxing out a certain weapon. Although I might mention it is a good idea to max points into the relevent weapon style you're using eg Two Weapon Style, Two Handed Weapon Style, etc.
It's subject to debate though but will also depend on whether you have Throne of Bhaal installed since you might want to completely ditch a weapon class for a better one.

Well grandmastery(if you have the grandmastery fix) is a good thing to have as it grants you more attacks per round, and the fighting styles are worth putting points into. Although dual-weilding and single weapon are more beneficial than the others they're all still worth it. So if you have a fighter pick a primary weapon to give him/her grandmastery in and a fighting style. You should have more than enough points for that by endgame and a few extras for back-up and off-hand weapons.

Gotta disagree. Sword and shield is totally useless - a couple extra AC for missile weapons only? Heck, I'd rather put it into darts than that.
I generally don't think single weapon is useful either - getting a better crit is nice, but it's just never going to be as useful as actually using a shield or weapon in the 2nd hand.
If you're using a two-handed weapon, then a single slot in two-handed weapon style is a must for the improved critical range. A second slot in it doesn't do much for you.
Dual wield is, of course, quite useful for getting the special effects of many nice weapons. In fact, I usually don't even care about the extra attack it gives, so if I'm short on proficiency points I'll sometimes just put two slots into it, enough to get rid of the penalty on the primary weapon only. I do usually spare a point for the third slot in it though.
