Umm it opens a door in the game.

Just follow the quest arrows and it lead you to the way.

it serves no real purpose, i would have thought it was to open up a chest or the cage where the prisioner was but those you can get opened without the key... which by the way disappears once you've done the quest.

Its used for the save the boy quest. Without it you will not be able to get to the boy. There is a door that has a hex keyhole in the hobbe caves.

That door has always been open. It act as a activator to put the "bandit" and "nymph" and "boy". Without it, they don't appear.

As a matter of fact, the bandit is actually there before you get the key, I've never checked to see if the boy and the nymph are but I guess I'll take your word for it.. and check with my next character of course :p :D

Nice theories kids, but none of you have yet got it.

The hexagon key is to release the bandit, without it, you cannot release the bandit. I mean, other than the cage being a hexagon-shape, theres no real other clue is there.

Also to contribute to the theory that it unlocks the Moonlit Tunnel/Hobbe Cave Focus Chamber, it doesn't, they are there from the start.

key...

in my past three games it has been for the Moonlit Tunnel Door...

i've tried to enter the tunnel many times before the Hobbe Cave Quest and the door just made the usual "Locked" clicking noise...

strange...

No word of a lie... 17 cows... I stopped 'em with moi... one 'and

I started a new character and here's the facts I got on this...

The bandit is in the cave and you can free him without the key.
The moonlit tunnel is in fact available and you can reach the Focus Chamber.
The kid and the Nymph are not there.

Now, I didn't have enough reknown to enable the Hobbe Cave quest so I'm not sure if that'd make any difference but this is what I got when I went in there right after I got off the Guild.

P.S. Sorry for reopening such an old post but I feel it is appropriate as it was never really ended :D

Cut the attitude.

Actually and perhaps this is just a glitch in my game but I have been able to open the door before and after the quest without the key but if you try the quest without it the door is locked.
